I am thinking of getting a ewa-marine U-AXP housing for my D70. What do you guys think? I have read some reports that I can use this model for my D70 and others that don't say anything. Any suggestions would be helpfull.
I would really like to purchase this onebecause I am hoping my Bodywill grow if you know what I mean. |

I would have to believe that with all the other bodies listed it must work with the D70. Somehow the lens must fit in the front, but could be a little fishy with a wide angle lens. I have been looking at housings and cameras but haven't made a decision yet, if you do get this I would be really interested on your thoughts. |

I am heading down to hawaii in about 7 months (hopefully) to go to a school of photography and I figured I would try and do something with that. |

I have the U-AXP and its works quite well. The only lens in your profile that will work with the housing is the 18-70. The housing requires an IF lens. Also remember that underwater magnification factor adds about 25% so the 18 is not very wide. You will also need to get a 67 to 77 step up ring (for the 18-70). I like using 12-24 & the 18-35 in mine. The 12-24 vignettes below about 14mm, but is still my favorite because the lens doen't change length when zooming. The bag pressure will push lenses that change length inwards. |

Steven do you have any pictures you could post? What about using the flash from with in the bag? I still wonder about another camera that could be used in more of an all weather mode.
Thanks,

The flash works just as it would on the camera except your of course limited to direct flash (no bouncing). For underwater I find the flash is essential. Even after just a few feet the water starts filtering out the full color spectrum, so providing the light source is nessesary. Its quite easy to change the settings on both the SB-600 & 800 which is good, because you can't change the flash comp on the camera while its in the bag due to the location of the flash button.
That brings up a different point. When you get the bag its quite hard to change settings on camera. Its just a learning curve. I have no trouble changing settings (except flash comp). My point is don't buy it right before a trip.
Here is the only photo I can access right now, because I'm away from home.

Several years ago, I bought a Ewa-marine bag to use with a film camera. (SLR) The one I have came with several adaptor rings. A few problems with the bags are 1) it is difficult to focus and to zoom your lens 2) getting most of the air out of the bag is important. Other wise you have a great floatation devise. Even with most of the air out of the bag you are not able to go very deep under water with it. (no scuba only snorkle) After trying to use it underwater a couple of times I gave up. Still have it in the basement collecting dust. |

That's why they sell the Ewa-Marine BF1 Lead Weight for U-A Series Housings. Add enough weight for neutral buoyancy at the surface, and then as you dive the air in the bag compresses and the camera won̢۪t have the tendency to pull you up. Remember weight is not as important underwater. So the few pounds you add to the bag that seems so daunting out of the water are hardly noticeable in it. |
