Before any editing of any kind, straight out of the camera in .jpeg format, what would you expect the levels for this picture to look like?

Edit: typos

I'll bite... a little bit of dark, some mid tones and lots of pixels on the right side of the histogram.

(I'm guessing, I haven't looked yet)

I might as well go the other way :-)) There could be lots on the left due to the black in the foreground, trunk and shadows. Baybe I have the histogram around the wrong way though since I didn't loo either.....

Well this version has been processed a bit, but not much. Plus resized and saved for web. It is 100% of the shot though - no crop on the shot at all. Main adjustment was a bit of cloning out of a leaf on the top left from another tree. Other than that, bumped contrast up 8% and sharpened after resize - 10.

You have both blown highlighs and clipped shadows in the same image. The red channel is blown on most of the yellow leaves, the green channel on some leaves and small areas of the sky, and the blue channel over most of the sky.
There is some deepshadow where one or more of the channels goes to "0" value, producing the spike at the bottom.
In short, you've got a really contrasty scene that pushed the limits of the capture. Did you shoot this in JPEG? If you shot RAW you might be able to "pull back" the highlights.
