My submission for "Personification" seems to be victim of not-being-able-to-see beyond the obvious. I had BIG hopes on this one and I still consider it to be my best submission ever. I expected voters to see what I was able to see in 'abstract' composition, and I tried to point out by using "suitable" title. But still I feel many voters missed out on what was being communicated.

But since I love this picture, and now I have chance to use more words than just title line, I want to share what I can see in the picture ... and fetch some valuable comments from DPC Members.

If you carefully see the picture (and let my words manipulate your imagination ;)) you should be able to see carefree dancing human figures. SOME of the voters, who commented on the picture, were able to see and passed on great "motivating" comments ...and I would tend to think only "some" were able to see it because results speak otherwise. Leave your comments (critique) to compensate for my loss of numbers :)

I posted it in wrong category. Did not know how to remove it. So posted in this one again :) I'm glad you were able to see dancers.

It's still pretty abstract, but it finished VERY strong. Nothing to be unhappy about.

It actually reminds me (from the thumbnail at least) of a print by Picasso (or was it Dali?) of Don Quixote riding his horse.

Wow! I'll take it as big compliment :) I think I'm slowly making up for the numbers lost...

Yes, I saw the dancers. I thought it was a great (lucky!) capture.

But, have you ever tried to point out a shape in the clouds to someone who just can't see it? - No matter how obvious it looks to you?

I loved the photo and rated it an 8. A great abstract IMO.

Nope. This is from incense sticks.

..and I agree- I'm trying to point out on what "I" can see...which might not be same for others :)

Anyway, most (ummm..infact all) comments have been motivating ...and those who did not "get" it, did not cared to leave words anyway :)

I personally can find very little artistic merit in photographing something like smoke - even if you capture an interesting abstract form, it's through no artistic input or control of your own. At best you can choose a good exposure and crop to an interesting bit.

However you go about it, you're just capturing something entirely by chance, rationalising what it looks like afterwards, and calling it art. I wouldn't want to start discussing what is and isn't art, of course, or the role of randomness in creativity... but i wouldn't be surprised the majority of your low voters didn't think much of it for these reasons.

tejinder,
I saw the dancers -- its a really nice photo. They are being watched by a moose, right? :-)

I think its a wonderful abstract. Even w/o the dancers I think the smoke trails just have a real nice flow to them.

riot,
I completely disagree with you. He did quite a bit to "control" the shot -- he arranged for good lighting, a black background, he conceived of the shot itself. Beyond that he was able to "see" the image in the smoke and highlight it through cropping. How is this less artistic than someone who captures that perfect expression in a candid or wedding shot?

I see three figures in various degrees of rising, the top one like an angel has risen and the middle one is in anguish because he or she is caught between earth and and the spiritual world..the one at the bottom is still earth bound and perfectly oblivious to the plight of others.

I SEE IT and IT IS COOL!!!
:)

Heck. I missed the dancers completely. I thought it was Picasso's Guernica. Must have been the moose that threw me off (I thought it was a bull). ;-) ...but I liked your picture alot even though I didn't see the dancers.

The image is not purely by chance. I had to take around 160 shots to get one which has recognizable figures. I got it verified from friends by not telling them what I can see, but asking for what they can see. There were four final versions, but this one was my personal fav out of those four.

I'm glad there is good feedback...and then there is "constructive" feedback. It's not getting "Ignored" :)
