A few weeks ago, I went to delete a scrarch photo from my portfolio and received several warning messages. The first was that I cannot delete challenge entries (it wasn't). The second warning was that any print files would be deleted. I figured they were just general warnings and said Ok to both.

Low and behold, somehow, more than one image in that portfolio had been selected--when I was only trying to delete the one. The image that was deleted was an important one. But it was then gone, as was the print file, as was all the references to it in forums, and comments, etc.

Now I've fixed "most" of that by reuploading (but I did lose things I didn't want to!).

Now I'm scared to delete! Each time I go to delete, I get both of those messages? I don't want to lose any more print files. How will I ever know when something else is accidentally checked? I can't always see all the files (especially in firefox), and for all I know there's a bug relating to checkmarks and firefox.

It seems you always get these messages, no matter what. Right?

It sure would be nice if you only got that warning when there were challenge photos or print file photos in the selection!

It sure would be nice if the delete box told us how many files we had selected for deletion!

And it would be nice if there were a delete button on the Image Editing page. That only applied to that one image. So then we'd know exactly which file we were about to delete.

I think that warning message appears only when you've selected file(s) with prints or challenge entries. But I agree if this wasn't the case, then your suggestions make perfect sense.

Oh Oh.

I just went into Internet Explorer rather than Firefox. I went to delete exactly the same file I was just about to delete in Firefox. I only got one warning message, about the permanence of the deletion. Nothing about challenge entries. Nothing about Print files!

So maybe there's a firefox bug relating to checkboxes. And maybe that's how my file which had a print file got deleted!

Anyone else care to try to delete from Firefox? Langdon? Drew?

Still experimenting. I should point out that I've moved the photos I wanted to delete into a portfolio folder called "Trash". That way I had fewer there, and could see all of them to make sure none were checked.

So I have 13 in the trash.

I select one of them in Firefox. I get the nasty Challenge and print message.

I select the same one in IE. Only the good "Permanent" message comes up.

I think its a bug, unless it's somehow related to my Firefox configuration or extensions. BUT IF SO, ITS A NASTY ONE that loses data. So HEADS UP.

I get the challenge message using Firefox as well so it looks like it's a browser issue.

Hope Langdon and Drew are on this. While it's browser specific, it's still something to do with the site code.

Meanwhile, I'll use IE to delete!

Why can't you delete a challenge entry?
10/18/2005 12:34:20 PM · #8
Because then the challenge records are inaccurate.

If there are special circumstances where you need to delete a photo, you can speak with the admins. If you just don't ever want your photos to remain online, you probably shouldn't be entering online contests. (You in general, that is.)

Yeah, go ahead and delete my only entry. While your at it, refund the membership fee I just bought since It's not a good idea in general for me to enter a challenge.Photosig allows you to withdraw or delete an image at any time.

No, but the terms of use that you agreed to allow DPC to use that image, pretty much as they wish.

I'm guessing no or he'd know that they dont' refund membership fees, either.

Does Photosig run contests or is it just for critiques?

Ah, boy, here we go again. Last January or so, right after I joined, there was a LONG thread on this "DPC ownership" issue. I can't find it offhand though. Lotta disgruntled words were exchanged, I remember that much...

So many topics here are cyclic.

When you enter a photo into a challenge, you grant DPC a perpetual license to use that image in the functioning of the site, that is, to maintain accurate challenge records.

Photographers retain ownership and copyright over their images, as is stated at the bottom of every page.

They sure are... has to be that way, new waves of conscripts entering the ranks constantly :-)

Actually there are state laws requiring a refund if requested in a certain time frame. And yes, photosig runs contests.

Insert standard disclaimer here about me not being a DPC employee

Actually, that's not quite correct.

The Terms of Service state the following:

Originally posted by DPChallenge Terms of Use:

6.2 You hereby grant DPChallenge.com a nonexclusive, worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, sublicensable (through multiple tiers) right to exercise any rights you have in the Member Information and Media, and otherwise to make use of the Member Information and Media (including publishing, disseminating, broadcasting, manipulating, reproducing, editing, translating, performing, modifying, or displaying any part of the Member Information) and/or Media alone or as part of other work in any form, media, or technology whether now new known or hereafter developed, to enable DPChallenge.com to continue the specific operation or marketing of the site.
(Emphasis added).

The phrase I've bolded is very important because it limits the rights of DPChallenge with respect to the actual use of this image. This means, for example, that while DPC can forever display an entry in the Challenge Results (for example), they cannot use the image for unrelated purposes -- for example, they can't print up a book of everyone's entries and try and sell it as a book (picture.com anyone?).

The restriction bolded above was added at the insistence of Drew and Langdon and against the advice of their attorney, precisely because, while they want to make sure the site can continue to operate with a minimum of disruption, they also want to make sure your rights in the images you post are protected.

-Terry

Not completely. When you delete an image from Photosig, a thumbnail version still remains, as do their rights to use. Our terms are comparable.

A thumbnail remains when you WITHDRAW an image, when you delete it it's gone.

Let's back up a second, to your original request.

Are you looking to have the image not show up at all on the site, or just not on your Portfolio page?
