For some reason, in PS7, when I select Image/adjustment/brightness-contrast, instead of the dialog box with 2 rulers, I get the ... little tool that looks like a pen, to select a color, if I press shift, I can select up to 4 points.
Would somebody know what that mode is (in the case of the contrast/brightness tool ?)
Merci d'avance !

You should still be getting the dialog. It could be off the screen (Try Window->Workspace->Reset Pallete Locations)

As for the pen tool, that is available to you in order to sample four 'spots' in the image wich will then show in your 'Info' window. That way you can keep track of color changes in 4 different spots of the photo.

Hope this helps.

Thanks .. tried it and it restored the palette locations but I still get into that mode. I know it's not easy to find a solution this way .. but that was a good idea !!!

My best suggestion would be to use either Curves or Levels (both also under the Adjustments menu). You should be able to accomplish the same effects with a greater degree of control.
If you put them into a separate adjustment Layer you can toggle the effect on and off to see how it looks, and go back and make refinements to your settings if it needs more work. You can even make more than one adjustment layer, if the first one is "close" but you want to tweak it a little.
When I'm done making adjustments, I use "Save A Copy" to save the file in TIFF, apply sharpening to the TIFF (now a flattened composite image), and then use "Save A Copy" again to save the final JPEG.

ARGHHHH...i have seen this problem before on my friends PC...are you using Windows XP? He also had dual monitors (laptot screen, and external monitor) and had to switch the screens around to get the dialog boxes to show.

One other thing to try is using the keyboard to do the adjustments (because I am SURE the dialog box is open somewhere on the screen, and you just can't see it) use the up/down arrows and the tab key to toggle between the rulers, and then hit 'Enter'...see if the image changes.

How am I sure? Well, if you are getting the sampling tool, like you said, that means that the dialog box IS open...somewhere. :)

Zadore .. you're right !!
ANd I even had that problem with that before ! I am using a laptop and at home I connect an external 17" flat scren and the windows was below ... I am right now travelling.
I did not connect the 2 events !!!

So .. I selected the tool, then pressed alt-space to bring the 'system menu', selected move and used the arrow to bring back the window in the middle of the screen !!!!!

THANKS !!!!!!!!!!

NYC December 25th and it's not scratches on my s30 :-)

Thanks guys

PS : Sometimes when I wonder where the city in blade runner come from ... NYC when the weather is bad !!!!!

Happy New Year to everybody and thanks to Linda and Phil.

I know it's better to use the curve, but for a quick adjustement or test I use brightness/contrast.
