I am needing a lens for indoor work. Sports like Karate tournaments, portraits, low lit rooms, etc. I need a stop action lens without flash.
I have the 17-85 EFS Canon but it is 4-5.6 I want to be able to shoot without flash as much as possible and although this has been a good lens, is too slow.
I would like some range to cover full body shots to facial emotions. I also want this lens to have good Bokeh when in studio with lights. I think a range of 24-70 28-80 etc should be fine?
Forgot to add, I have a Canon 20D
Thanks

Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 XR Di. FANTASTIC fast lens. Great price. At $360, that's a awesome bargain for that lens.
No brainer for what you're asking.

Get the Canon 70-200L 2.8 IS. Go on ... everyone is doing it. :-)
And besides, the longer lens will let you get good closeups of the tournaments without having to get too close to the action.
And the IS will be handy too so that you don't introduce camera shake while you're shooting at lower speeds due to lighting at the tournament. |

Yeah, the only problem here is that the 70-200L 2.8 IS runs about $1100.
The 70-200L 4 may not be quite as hot, but its still a killer lens, and is half the price. It doesn't have IS, but people have been shooting without IS for years, so it can be done well with practice.

I only said it that way because it seems like everyone I know that has the 20D is getting the 70-200 IS. The white glass is getting pretty thick around here!!! |

$1100 is the price for the NON-IS 70-200 f2.8, the IS version is about $1700...

Actually, the 70-200/s.8 IS goes for more like $1700, the non-IS is the $1100 version.
For indoor work, f/2.8 is marginal, and f/4 is a prescription for disappointment. The IS would not be a great benefit with fast-moving subjects. The ideal lens would be a fast prime, like the 85/1.8.

What? I have the 75-300 4-5.6 IS and a can of Krylon white :P
I'll check out the white tubes a little later, I need something that can go wide for the flying kicks and the medium zoom to catch the pain of foot meeting face.
That Tamron looks sweet.

That was going to be my other suggestion, but he seemed to want a zoom lens. I'm thinking of that lens myself.

I don't know many people that are unhappy with that lens.

I have the 50mm 1.8. Unbelievable lens for $75. Not crazy about the cheap body but almost priced to be disposable. The 85 1.8 prime looks great but I am so used to zooms.

Yeah I would echo the 70-200 IS USM. I realize it is expensive, but other lenses are like someone else said, a disapointment in such light.
If you are shooting indoor karate, I can tell you (as I did this the last 2 weekends) the settings will be 1/125 2.8 ISO 1600. You really don't want to take that extra grain at 3200, and really don't want to start shooting at 4.5 and 1/60 ..... So this is really the minimum, there is nowhere ot move. I tried shooting one event with my 28-135 3.5-56 and there was lots of blur and grain.. not good. And if anyone tried to tell you the 70-200 is too long it is NOT. It is perfect for this type of photographhy.
Mind you, if you are just shooting for yourself, the amount of grain and blur you get might be acceptable.

f2.8 isn't really fast enough for the kind of shooting barndog has outlined, with or without IS. The 50mm f1.8 or the 85mm f1.8 are the better choices.

I beg to differ.
I used the 70-200 IS USM for the last two weekends shooting approx 1000 images of karate.. and it worked dandy. Obviously 1.8 would be nicer, but 50 mm would be NOT close enough at all, and 85mm would still be too far away.
if you go to Sportsfotografen you can seem the images i took with the 70-200 lens at two taekwando tournaments.

LEAF - Just checked out your Karate shots. Pretty much proves your point about the 70/200.
Real problem is that people aren't happy with lesser quality lenses for very long. Then they suffer what I call "Buyers Remorse", it translates into "I should have waited and saved for the best".
I have always said "Buy cheap and you will buy TWICE"
How many times do you hear - that "Sxxxx or Txxxxx, is ALMOST as good, but less money".

What focal length are most of those shots? I am beginning to wonder if a prime in the 85mm - 100mm range would be just the thing.
The Canon 85mm 1.8 would still do well in the studio / indoors and gives more reach than the 28-70 zooms. I have a 50mm 1.8 and the 17-85 zoom.
Have to wait on the 70-200 due to high cost.

You need to put a kroner in the floppy disk slot on your computer to see the images. |
