I am looking to buy new software and can not decide between Photoshop CS2 or Corel Painter. What I am looking to do is turn photos into paitnings. Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated. ASAP.

Paint Shop Pro 9 has a function which no other program has: A simulation of painting with oil colours. You do the painting yourself, (not a filter) but it's pretty easy and the results look good. I guess PSPX has the function as well.

You looking for programs that automate the process, or programs that allow you to do it by hand? It's an important distinction. "Fractal Painter" is perhaps the leader in software for doing it by hand, and has a huge online community very similar to photoshop's that creates and publishes plug-in filters for the program, posts up tutorials, has discussion boards, the works.

I'm not familiar with "Corel Painter" but if you mean "Corel PhotoPaint", go with Photoshop. I've used both and although PhotoPaint is a very capable program, Photoshop is the industry standard and it's just easier to gind pulgins, help, tutorials etc. In DPC, for example, if you ask a PS question you get immediate and useful information. Ask a PP question and you're lucky to get a response, let alone a useful one.
