Is the file size of an image based on the image dimensions, or on a number of pixels contained in the image, holding the complexity of the image constant?
The reason I'm asking is this: DPC has the 640x640 pixel size maximum for its photos which is fine. 640 x 640 = 409,600 pixels. So would an image that is 800x512 (also 409,600 total pixels), be roughly the same file size, given that the two images are each of say, a solid color or a pattern?

Yes, the uncompressed file size is based on the number of pixels multiplied by the bit depth (usually 24 bit for RGB color).
Once you introduce compression schemes like JPEG, the final size (on disk) is also dependent on the characteristics of the image content, as flat color can be compressed more efficiently than detail areas. |
