DPReview have just posted the full review of the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II

They gave it a 'below average' rating....

(Kidding!)

Here's the last two paragraphs of his conclusion;

So this brings us to our conclusion, surprisingly it wasn't as straightforward as you may think. In my opinion the EOS-1Ds Mark II is the ultimate digital SLR (taking into account resolution, build, speed, features, robustness etc.) however it's big problem is its big price tag. In our review of the Nikon D2X we clearly demonstrated that it is more than a match for the EOS-1Ds despite a deficit of 4.4 megapixels. So if you're building an entire new system the D2X will be an attractive proposition.

However for the professional (especially if they already own Canon lenses) to whom price is not a deciding factor and who wants the ultimate in high resolution, a full frame sensor, professional features, build quality, speed and reliability the choice is simple.

It's been out there for a couple of months. Granted its a pre-production copy of the body.

I think the 1Ds is overpriced, as the Nikon D2X seems to have a very similar performance/imaging and is $5000 vs $8000.

Perhaps the next 1Ds Mark III will be along the price point of a comparable Nikon.

When the D2X comes with a full frame sensor we can talk about price comparisons. Until then it's all apples and oranges.

So the point I was trying to make earlier when I mentioned the Canon 5D had to do with this comment: "However for the professional (especially if they already own Canon lenses) to whom price is not a deciding factor and who wants the ultimate in high resolution, a full frame sensor, professional features, build quality, speed and reliability the choice is simple".

The reviewer totally neglects the 5D. If I'm a Canon lens owner and I am looking to up the functionality of my camera, but don't want to spend $7K on the 1Ds MarkII, why would I look at a $5K Nikon D2X and not the Canon 5D at the same 12+megapixel range, and coming in at $3.3K. AND, the 5D is full sensor.

Seems to me (if the review just came out), that the reviewer missed a big piece of the puzzle.

Well, he does say this under the cons section of the conclusion;

"The Nikon D2X is about $2,500 less and the Canon EOS 5D is about $4,000 less"

The Canon 5D is not considered a professional level camera. The Nikon D2X is. There's more to "professional" than just sensor format. The jury is still out on FF sensors. There are pros and cons to them, just as to APS sized sensors and just because a camera has one or the other is not going to be the deciding factor if one is "professional" grade or not.

But it may be a deciding factor for the "professional" making the choice.

The quotation includes the words "...price is not a deciding factor". With that proviso, the 1DsII would win hands down.
