The question's in the title. What is the proper distance(or average distance) for viewing an 8x12 print?

well i don't think there's really a set distance... I would think that anywhere from 1 foot to across a room should be fine.

The rule for art (I think I'm right on this) is twice the distance of the diagonal. That rule may only apply to paintings in a museum, but it seems like a decent rule of thumb.
