I got a photo that's been called 'edgy'. What do you call edgy? Something that borders tasteless or tacky? Or against good morals? Or borderline porn?

And is it a good thing to post an edgy photo in a challenge?

Your thoughts?

Maybe they mean you used too much sharpening?

I think the "critic" was telling you that your picture was over shaprened; causing it to have jagged edges. Could this be what he/she meant?

one person's erotica is another person's porn.

edgy, like everything else is a personal preference question - unless Jaime is right on the money.

Edgy...approaching the outer boundaries of what is 'usual/the norm.' What boundary that is depends on the photo in question (and the viewer of course). Whether or not it is a good thing to submit an edgy photo to a challenge depends on the boundary it threatens. :P

That didn't help much, did it? LOL

I agree more your earlier definitions, although I think it can be anything which pushes the boundaries of any sensibilities, not just those you mention; a photo the "average" viewer might find both disturbing and thought-provoking (really the same thing, huh?).

Seems to not be a good idea to enter an edgy photo if you want a high score. For example, I don't think Lonny Shavelson's Needle Park, Zurich photos would do well in the B+W Protrait challenge.
But you have to decide for yourself what priority you give score vs. statement.

I think edgy would be something that is provocative, maybe uncomfortable to view, or daring? I don't think it has anything to do with bad taste or morality.

hehe... no, the photo is not oversharpened. The word was used in a less literal sense.

edgy = daring, or counter-convention. but at the same time maintaining standard artistic merits.
