Ever re-shot a completed challenge just because you just didn't like the results?
I wasn't going to enter the Conspiracy Challenge, but just before the deadline my wife said, “ Wow, look at the moon”. Having seen the documentary A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Moon, I just ran out in the front yard, snapped & threw it up. I spent a total of maybe 10 minutes from start to finish. I knew the photo wasn’t up to my standards, but I just wanted to comment on the conspiracy.
A couple of weeks ago I got an adapter to mount my Nikon glass on my Olympus SLR. So with the 2x crop factor my 500mm f8 becomes a 35mm equivalent 1000mm on the Olympus, creating a perfect candidate for a re-shoot. Here are the resultsâ€Â¦

Nice result with a long lens, but there's no substitute for a telescope:

Guilty as charged! But I left him a comment too so I'm mildly helpful. |

I didn't really reshoot this image, but I noticed that I should take more time chosing which image to submit:

Oh, any thoughts on the second?

hyperfocal,
Having had astronomy for a hobby for 40+ years and seen lots of good telescope shots of the moon it is hard to get excited and feel that a shoot of a full moon by itself grabs me. I would add that with any shot of the moon by itself it is going to hard to convince someone you have a great image - most people have seen lots of those before. That makes it hard to have anyone give you more than a average score for the image. So you are fighting an uphill battle to get a good score with those images. Then without a good telescope to get the image you are at an even greater disadvantage.
I like much better the images at other times when the shadows show the mountains and craters much better. Side light works much better on the moon.
gloda,
I much prefer the original image - to me it came out somewhat undervalued in the challenge. The original image has a much better focus. I would say the background is a bit to clear to me. The new image overexposes the flower and does not have a quality focus to it. |

Thanks for your comment fixedintime. I applied a soft focus effect to the second image, as I thought it would fit the dreamy atmosphere. The original is just as sharp as the one I submitted.

gloda, I guess the soft focus issue shows what you are up against in the voting. The soft focus effect didn't work for me, so I ended up seeing it as a focus problem. |

I think the soft focus vs. OOF discussions here on DPC are very interesting. It seems you ave to be very careful with SF if you don't want your shots to be considered OOF. But that's another thread ;)
And, could I get some opinions on the re-edit of the rule of thirds challenge?
