If you have WinXP turn off the System Restore before you get started with the clean .. will increase your chance of clean up tons! Good Luck!!

Norton's Security Suite is fine but is not as comprehensive .. turning off system restore is a big key to getting it all cleaned up .. and yes .. it scans much like Norton's Anitvirus but lots of times it is a bit more updated ... I have successfully cleaned quite a few machines using this and I hope it works for you!

you may need more than Norton Internet security. you have a nasty if its deleating you email from outlook.

you need to go download these free programs, install them, check for updates and scan your system.

THis is a trial version of Ewideo security suite, its very good

Ewideo

Panda Active scan online scanner (must use IE to scan)
Panda Scan

Ad Aware SE

Spybot

if you still have troubles after installing and running all these scanners please visit this site for help. But please read and follow the forum rules. you must register (its free) Im a member there and was sent there by another DPC user. my userid over there is the same as here

or simply get Microsoft's Antispyware .. which currently is free and when it's not I will purchase it because so far it works awesome!!
10/14/2005 12:05:53 AM · #10
yes the MS Antispyware is pretty good. dont forget to check for updates and security patches from Microsoft.

also DONT use IE as your browser....get Firefox for your web browser

Actually I use system restore to help get rid of viruses. Restore to a point before you were infected and then run virus scan (I use trend micro's free online scan as well) This will stop the viruses from loading when you turn on the computer, making it super easy to remove them with virus scan.

Using this one-two punch I've yet to encounter a virus I can't get rid of.

I think I am going to cry or scream or possibly shoot something! Nothing is working and in the end when I finally got everything important off my computer to disk and tried to restore it said I had no restore points!!!!!!!!!! ARGHHHHHHHHH
If you don't see me around for a while it's because I have finally gone insane and fired the shotgun on the CPU. Hey- the monitor I can keep, it's calibrated perfectly! ;0)
Thanks for all your help guys! :0)

If you've gotten everything important off your computer why not do a full system reinstalation from the disk that came with your computer when it was new. I think that's the best possible scenario to get your machine really clean. Taking all the valuable stuff off and then putting it back is a lot of work. But it sounds like half of that work is behind you.

not if the virus has infected the boot sectors...

Show me a "virus" that has done this that's been around in the last ten years. In fact, show me a pre-built system (like a common dell or whatever) the bios of which is set up to allow boot sector writing by default.

As far as i can see, this thread is all ignorance and scaremongering in equal amounts. Which is of course perfect for a typical american audience, but the majority of people on this site tend to pride themselves on getting things technically right, and yet nobody has pointed out that your email probably disappeared because of some pop3 crap with your isp, and word probably crashes because it wasn't installed properly or some other windows nonsense.

Not everything wrong with your er, "cpu", is caused by a virus or "bug"... but the shotgun will sure fix it. Don't count on your monitor retaining your careful colour profiling all by itself though.

I'm with you on the virus not surviving a format. But I disagree that this thread is ignorance. While defragmenting and virus protection are the be-all end-all solutions of the ignorant, a virus can cause erratic behavior more often than not.

For example, I had my system time changing on it's own. I would correct it, only to find it'd gained an hour or two a few minutes later. All the research I found on the internet said my battery was failing. I don't remember what made me scan, but I found viruses. After removing them, my system time has remained correct ever since.

Fact is, your guesses as to what the real problems are, are just that - guesses. And therefore no more accurate than viruses, or space aliens messing with her computer.

jeez - someones a bit pissy.

no you're absolutely right there is no such thing. the possiblity of it happening - say from a floppy disk is completely impossible. and if perchance it were to happen, reinstalling the OS would be sure to fix it...... i'm an ignorant bastard.

My e-mail did not disappear because of a POP or ISP error. I have four inboxes, only two of which are affected. The whole inbox was lost it's not that I'm not getting new ones in. That said, the adwares have found the virus & just can't fix it. I got the computer 2nd hand and did not get any disks with it. Also there are programs on the computer I don't want to lose.
You may be right- I am ignorant about these things but I have gotten some pretty good advice so far. But I am not trying to scare anyone, just frustrated & asking for a little help.
Thank you for the monitor advice (or was that sarcasm too?) but I was just kidding about the monitor, I know I would have to calibrate it to a new CPU, just trying for a little humor in my desperate little ignorant post...
