Just saw this today and snapped a few pics. He/she flew away when I tried to get closer. Is it a Heron?

Definitely a Heron.
Good luck getting close to those things. I tried for hours to sneak up on Blue Herons out on Prince Edward Island (Canada) and they always fly away when you get yourself set up nicely.
I'm amazed by the stories in this thread as I had yet to meet anyone who had actually gotten close to one of these birds.

I chanced upon a green heron pigging out one day last spring in a nature conservancy.
