Geesh, what next. I just heard on the radio an announcement about the threat of nuclear attack on US soil. The discussion was about "little known, unsecure weapons grade uranium available at unsecure colleges" they went on to say "these college labs are unlocked and accessible during the middle of the night and have no guards". Well, so much for "little known".

On that subject, take a look at this thread I just created //www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=287803

So my question is why colleges have "weapons grade uranium" and whether this is really true at all. The media can be really sensational with this crap.

It's more likely, if there is any truth to this at all, that the uranium would be suitable for a "dirty bomb" (and in that regard the media decided it was "weapons grade")...

It's also not like the uranium is sitting in a drawer in the lab...

Makes you wonder if they are more worried about our safety, or their ratings?
If I found a security gap I think I'd discuss it with the right people rather then sell it as a news story.

A lot of schools actually have their own nuclear reactors and they probably do have real weapons grade uranium.
Students in that program would have pretty easy access to it.

Check out this story for a much more unbiased account of things...

Uranium on campuses

8 universities have weapons grade uranium for their reactors.

The uranium at UW-Madison where the infiltration was attempted was at the bottom of a 40-foot pool of water.

The students did not get inside the reactor, only to the door to take photos.

What happened to the days when 20/20 or Primetime or whatever actually reported about things that mattered? I'm sure tonights IMPORTANT story about NUCLEAR BOMBS is going to be followed by the lastest on Jessica Simpson and her new beau.

I'd like to see some of the so-called news media inside the reactor.....

i'm in the canadian media and I think that media is capable of disservicing themselves and the cities they live in. for example, the amount of coverage toronto gave to SARS (something like 10 people died, which is nothing compared to events elsewhere in the world) killed our own tourism for a long time.

even people in the media, who do have a responsbility to inform the public about potential danger, should know when to quiet down.

I really agree with you. As a physician, I get livid at some of the stuff that goes on our local news. People panic about West Nile when 100x the number die from inflenza and we don't think twice. In my specialty, mold allergy gets the royal treatment in the media with "toxic mold" and "black mold" horror stories. It just makes each appointment take longer as I have to uneducate each patient about the real risks of mold.

We saw the same thing in dental when one of the major news stations did the report on dangerous levels of mercury in your fillings. Heck you release more mercury vapors removing them for "safe" ones than if you just left them alone. We had constent influx of people wanting their fillings out, and blaming them for all sorts of medical problems they had.

It's a question of outrage and actual-risk factors.

High outrage and low risk = lots of attention.
Low outrage and high risk = not as much attention.
