I have just had a totally unacceptable comment left on my challenge photograph. I really don't mind what comments are made as long as it's justified, but yuk! is niether helpful or kind.
I didn't enter the challenge because I thought I had any chance of winning, but because up to now it's been fun. People who leave pointless comments spoil it for the less confident novice photographers. So please don't do it!!

I don't want to cause any trouble I just hope the person who left it would see how hurtful they can be. By the way they didn't even have the guts to leave their ID (it was hidden)

most baggies are registered users. some members prefer to be baggies to keep anonymity :)
i don't have a bag over my head :) if it doesn't meet the challenge or executed poorly, i will let you know and people have PMed me for that too to explain which is ok by me (not sure about other people though) :) |

Was there a reason for them to say Yuck? I know there are a few shots that appear to have had a very junivile mind set on the them and could warrent a Yuck, I have yet to find a way to comment on them that wouldnt be offensive to the person who took the shot. Just food for thought because maybe that was as much as could be said. |

i wear a bag but thats because people PM complaining, that I know nothing..which i may not know how to photograph well but I know what wins. I usually give tens to most of the people who have won, but not all...i would never leave a comment like yuck or gross unless it was joking and I would explain it as a joke. like i said ewww to one of the personaifcation entries, but explained not that it was gross but a eww as in it scared me. But I scored it very high because it was a great photo. Like Rex said, report it.

I really don't have a problem with any critisism what so ever, whether it be a comment or p/m as long as it's explained, so that I can either take the advice and hopefully improve my next entry or chose to disagree with the comment.
I do think though that hiding behind a bag is a bit naughty if it's used to be anonimously spiteful
Anyway I've decided that now I've got it off my chest and I've had some kind p/m's I'm not going to let it bother me anymore. They're not worth the time and effore :-)

No reason to say yuk except I will admit to there being a very slight amount of handshake due to me not using a tripod. I was never expecting to achieve a high score for this very reason but it wasn't enough to deserve a yuk! I truly wouldn't enter something that I felt was not of a reasonable standard.
I must admit I was struggling with time this week so it was slightly rushed. |

I agree with you on this. And "yuck" is not worth anyone's time, to write or to read.
I became a baghead so that my comments could be taken at face value. I don't know who the maker of an image is when I'm voting or commenting and I think that helps be look at images more objectively. I feel the same way about comments, now, I didn't always--but I think its important to take them for whatever their worth (even if they're worthless).
(By the way, my position on being a baghead was only strengthened recently when a poster in another thread told me I needed to go win a ribbon before he would give my comments any value...)

Then why post it here if you don't want to cause trouble? PM the person and ask about it after the challenge.
Also, "Yuk" is not a bad comment if you were going for the yuk look (i.e. taking a photo of dog poo or vomit or something). The Yuk may be in reference to the subject and not your photographic skills.

lol, if only people with ribbons have anything worth commenting then I'd better keep my ideas to myself :-)
Please don't get me wrong though I don't have a problem with "baggies" at all. I just want to learn more by all your comments and what your 'wearing' really doesn't worry me. Personally I think I would look good in a bag! |

It is difficult to place much merit on comments. Considering they are so short for the most part and tend to be based more on opinion than visual or artistic principal. So, if they are critical, that might be good! What the #$#% heck do they know anyway...............

Ahhh...there you are. ;^)
Isn't opinion what drives how a photo is rec'd? After all, most principals started with an opinion somewhere, sometime - yes?
...and don't respond with just a question. You drive me crazy when you do that! ;^)

I think that yuck is a just fine comment. If for example that I took a photo of a snake, or a mouse, or a dead animal, or a bug, then if someone said 'yuck' to me, then I would know that they didn't like that subject. Then I would know that I wouldn't be selling that photo to at least one person, and if that person feels that way, then probably more people feel that way. That's how I would take that comment. |

Why would someone post 'yuck'? Is this considered a helpful comment? Is it a form of dialogue?

Why shouldn't they? Is it not a form of dialogue? What constitutes dialogue when it comes to comments? How should comments be formulated? What qualifies one to leave a comment? What qualifies a comment as good? What makes it helpful? Is helpful and good always the same thing? Should there be restrictions as to what one can say in a comment? Why is it not okay to post what you feel about a photo? Why would someone call out a comment in the forums? Is this helpful? Is posting negative feedback about a comment a form of dialogue? What are the guidelines for visual or artistic principle? Should comments be limited only to those guidelines? |

I hate those bags.. I have a very dismal score this challenge... One person left me a comment stating they felt it was the best shot of the challenge.. I so wanted to say thank you. They made my sad score feel a little better. I feel that if one person liked it that much then it is worth suffering any score. |

It's the reaction they had to the photo. Sure, without explanation, it may be hard to figure out what the viewer saw. Just remember that not everyone will see the image the same way the photographer does.
The hardest thing is to separate yourself from your image. Don't take anything personal (I know easier said than done) and keep shooting and entering.

I got similar comments on my Beverages entry (The Original Beverage. dog drinking water from a tap). I didn't mind though as even though I find it an interesting shot taken at an interesting angle a lot of others obviously didn't. I got comments such as, " OMG that's creepy, Ew. I did NOT want to see inside a dogs mouth, I am sorry but this just seems really gross etc. The fact that it was an image that had the potential to "gross people out" means I don't take offence at these comments, in fact they make me smile! If however my photo had been a genuine attempt at a "beautiful" shot and I had recieved these comments then I would have been upset. The problem is how does the voter know when you are trying to achieve the EW look or how you will react to their comment? I simpathise with you but my advise would be to ignore comments that have no constructive value and don't let them ruin your enjoyment of this site.
