1st question: what is it called when you get a bunch of pictures, and make it into one big picture. Ive seen those kinds of pictures. At first it looks like a picture of something, and then when you get even closer to inspect it, you find it is composed of a bunch of little pictures. What is this called?

2nd question: is it easy to do? i can imagine it is time consuming and tedious.

3rd question: how do you do it? can photoshop do it?

1: Mosaic
2: Probably not
3: Don't know, Probably so not real sure

Hey that's 4 questions.

WARNING !!!! WARNING !!!! WARNING !!!!!!

I wanted to see what that program Centarsia looked like, so I downloaded it. I scanned it (with McAfee) before installing it, but now my computer is having major problems.
I am certain I have a virus now, and can't get rid of the darn thing.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD THAT PROGRAM !!!!!!!!!

You think it was that program really?
10/12/2005 09:40:44 AM · #7
I've used it before with no problem.

Edit: Just downloaded and installed it again with no problems. Perhaps it's something else?

Personally, I refer to those as photo montages.

This is what I think of when I read the original post in this thread:

This is what he said: "At first it looks like a picture of something, and then when you get even closer to inspect it, you find it is composed of a bunch of little pictures."

I take that to refer to a photo mosaic, where from a distance you see what appears to be a recognizable image of something, then up close you see it's composed of lots and lots of tiny, square images of many different things, each of a color/density that contributes a piece of the entire mosaic.

One software for this, with examples, is here.

Beetle, what antivirus program do you use? I recommend Avast which is free for home use.

Using that, I occasionally get virus detection alerts that are nothing more than a little cookie that looks suspicious. Particularly when something is going to be downloaded.

I don't worry about it too much. I run a virus check when I feel uncomfortable and it invariably comes up clean.

Avast was recommended by one of the best technical forums on malware that I found when trying to clean my sister's computer a few months ago. Avast updates virus definitions every single day. My sister now uses ClamWin available free from sourceforge.net. It is another option as well. It's OK, but Avast is a little slicker and faster.

Norton is a joke. It blocks tons of stuff, but lets in viruses. I got 3 trojans that were a few months old. Loads of fun for a brand new computer with a brand new paid antivirus program.

Re my virus problem - as yet unsolved:
I downloaded the program (and was a little surprised at the casual tone of it all, e.g. in the user agreement) and saved it to disk. I scanned it, then installed it.
When I went to try it out, I found that I was getting some error messages from it, obviously it hadn't installed properly. By now, my computer had started to "fell funny", it wasn't reacting the way it should.
I decided to uninstall Centarsia and then take it from there.
Even the uninstall felt weird - including a message that I had already uninstalled it when I hadn't.
As soon as that program was installed, McAfee turned off and I couldn't turn it back on. Anything else I tried to open or close refused to do it (including task manager). Later I realized it wasn't refusing totally, it just takes a full 2-3 minutes.
I forced the computer off and rebooted, but that didn't help either.
I went to Trend Micro to do a "housecall" virus scan, but (for the first time ever) it won't let me tick the boxes of which part to scan, and until those boxes are ticked, it won't let me scan.

I have since managed to run a McAfee scan, plus the online version of Symantec, neither found anything.
Hubby and I checked the processes running and checked the "add/remove programs" list, can't see anything out of place.

My computer still acts funny, I still can't run housecall, and McAfee still gets turned off when it shouldn't. Sometimes things open and close properly, sometimes they take 2-3 minutes to do so.

I can't say for certain that Centarsia had anything to do with it, but the facts are this:
everything was running perfectly until the very moment I installed that program, now I am having a bunch of problems I never had before.

Something obviously isn't right, but I don't know how to fix it.
mk, I am certainly not blaming you in the least even if it truly DID come with Centarsia, you didn't know it would do that.
But I am hoping someone has some good ideas.

Until a few days ago, I used Nortons. Many people hate it, but I never had any problems with it. Hubby reckons Nortons sent the virus out of spite for uninstalling it *g*.

Oops. Looks like I didn't read it as carefully as I should. You're completely right Bear.

Oh no, I know you weren't blaming me. I was just skeptical that it truly was the problem as it's a fairly well known software that's been linked from a number of places.

A few months ago, I installed Pixmantic's Raw Shooter and had a bunch of problems right away. I couldn't believe that Raw Shooter, a program that so many people recommended, would be so riddled with adware but it was the only thing I'd installed recently. (I even posted a thread about it.) To be honest, I can't now remember what the problem was but it wasn't Raw Shooter. It was apparently just a coincidence. Having used the Centarsia software myself with no problem, I just question that it's really what's causing your problems, that's all. Hope you get it all straightened out!

As an aside, I've been using Norton for as long as I can remember. The only problems I've ever had were during the 3 months I didn't use it. A bunch of viruses were the kick in the pants I needed to renew my subscription. :)

You should never leave your system completely undefended. My sister almost totally lost control of her computer with a particularly nasty virus that Norton could neither see nor fix. She is a computer science graduate and between the two of us (she came to me for help :), we removed it by hand. The virus itself was an older self-replicating trojan. We put it on my CF card and I zipped it and rar'd it in my PDA, then sent it off to Norton. Funnily enough, it was safe to email via hotmail, which detected no virus through the double compression. I also used a computer full time connected with no antivirus for a year and a half that belonged to my roommate. I had a viral problem once that I removed by hand.

PCCillin is considered decent, but no better than the free ones I mentioned.

I also have tried the housecalls, but I found them to be of no real help when I got tagged on this computer. Avast chewed 3 trojans up and spat em out. All were on my system with Norton running and I ran three separate full checks with Norton.

The problems on your system are suspicious. I would recommend going out and getting Avast ASAP. You may have to disable your current antivirus protection, but seeing as it isn't doing anything anyhow, it won't make a difference, Once you get the program, and the virus definitions are updated, unhook from the net and run it. Then hook back up to the net and run again.

You might find some sort of malware, but you also might not. You may just have found some problems.

System security and efficiency are big issues. Google is your friend. Anything that shows up that you don't understand, throw it in google plus "definition". Read up on every single process running in your task manager and make a little list. Usually there is a half dozen unnecessary programs. Another one that can slow things down a lot is your internet explorer cache. Try clearing it. There are a few viruses and malware programs that stupidly sit in your cache and get thrown out when you clear it.

If you have more questions, I'm not an expert, but feel free to PM me for suggestions. I'd be more than happy to help you out until you get your system clean.

Sorry about the Hijack folks! Now back to your regularly scheduled thread.
