This may seem like a silly question to ask (I was always told as a child never to be afraid to ask a silly question) but can anybody tell me if there is a technical term to describe a digital photo before you edit it. What I mean is, you know that weird misty/milky kind of look images have before you apply levels to them, what is it called?

Anybody?

Thanks for that Bear.

Simple enough term I guess. Is this something that only affects digital images?

Misty / Milky look ? That doesn't seem to be very common unless you are shooting in a very low contrast environment...

Yeah, It's just something that I notice on a few of my images everynow and again. The colours seems quite weak but come to life once I have a dabble with the levels in photoshop. I've managed to get the "milky" effect in a variety of environments containing different forms of subjects, from bright outdoor shots without flash to indoor shots with flash.
