Forgot to say where I get my 'stuff'...
My shop of preference for gear is Photo Warehouse CHCH. I've spent about 15k there in the last year or so, they have always been helpful, and they are prepared to spend time talking rubbish with a hack like myself... :-). I also got my 580ex flash from Kens cameras as they were the only people who had one in stock the weekend my old 420ex died in a swimming pool accident! Paid too much for it, but needed a good flash for a paid gig.
I get my prints done by Photo&Video because I like the more subtle tones & colours their Dlab produces over the Fuji Frontiers that lots of other labs use, although my tastes are shifting a little on that one since they changed to using Fuji paper in their Agfa plant. (www.photo.co.nz online printing service)
I had an experience at Photo & Video a couple of weeks back which means I'll probably never buy anything appart from prints there now. One of their staff walked away from me while I was playing with/looking at the new 1DIIN and started doing something else, even though I thought I was asking questions that would suggest I wasn't a tire kicker. It took me a minute or so to realise he was ignoring me, so I thanked him or the free fondle, picked up my prints and left.
I get my CF cards from //www.flashcards.co.nz, Their prices are pretty good, service is outstanding and I know one of the owners via a club, and he's a good bloke.. (No, I can't get you a discount, but he might give you one if you say I refered you... Hmmmmm, maybe not). I'm also using their generic BP-511 batteries. Quite a bit cheaper than the OEM ones and seem to work fine, although I have had a couple crap out just recently. They are taking them back under warranty.
I have a trade account with a supplier of inkjet paper & ink for my supplies there, which I only use for proofs and stuff to go on my own wall.. I never give anyone an inkjet print without making it clear to them that it'll fade fairly quickly, and isn't even vaguely waterproof. (I use an HP6110 and HP 'everyday' glossy photo paper. $0.17 + GST a sheet can't be beat for proofs.)
I've also imported some stuff from B&H, brolly clamps I couldn't get here, some slave triggers, and a couple of 77mm B+W filters that are silly expensive here. I ebayed my white shoot-though umbrellas as they were cheaper that way, even including freight from the US.. Go figure.
I got my macro extension tubes, and an EOS 3 film body from trademe. There's a lot of good stuff on there if you watch that you don't wind up paying more than retail, and stick to sellers with a good feedback record.
I belong to the Ellesmere Camera club. See my long post in [url=
