DISCLAIMER: I'm not trying to beat up on people who complain about comments. REALLY. I can totally understand why they voice their concerns and I empathize with them. I'm only offering a suggestion to streamline the process.

It seems like we go through a new thread every week with someone complaining about comments they dislike. Though this may be 'cleansing' for someone who's been offended, I'm sure I'm not the only one who is somewhat annoyed by the repetitive threads on a topic that has been beaten to death. I don't think they alter the behavior of voters (at least not significantly), they bring down the general morale of the site, and they boot 'more useful/productive/photography-related' threads out of the current line-up.

It would be nice to have an official site stance on comments or a obvious link (blinking red) to one of the umpteen million threads so that people who are upset about comments they've received can go and read the site's policy/concensus opinion on less than tactful feedback.

Taken from the DPChallenge Rules:

Site Etiquette
Constructive criticism and competition are more than welcome on the site. Blatant instances of slander, profanity, vulgarity, or other personal attacks anywhere on the site will not be tolerated. This is a website for people of all ages and skill levels to have fun and improve their photography. All we ask is that you treat others with the respect they deserve.

Infractions of site rules may result in disqualification from the current challenge, suspension from features of the site, loss of account, and/or forfeit of any titles or winnings at the discretion of the site administrators. Inappropriate behavior or comments may be edited or removed from the site without notice to the offending user.

Just play nice, and have fun!

Whoops...my dumb...there is a rule,

And yet, the 'problem' persists. Maybe a modification...add the line 'If you receive offensive feedback, please report it to the site administrators to resolve the issue.' I also don't think many of the comments in question fit into the category of 'Blatant instances of slander, profanity, vulgarity, or other personal attacks.' Most (not all) fall into a grey area.

I sometimes think we need an special area for recurring threads. We could just start the following threads every week:

1. The Comment Thread - Covers: "Why don't I get any comments?", "Why are people leaving me mean comments?", and "Why is my score dropping like a stone, when all I am getting are good comments?"

2. The Challenge Thread - Covers: "Why are there so many photos that have nothing to do with the challenge except the title?", "Why aren't people more open to alternative interpretations of the challenge?", and "What drugs are the people voting on my photo taking?"

3. The Change Thread - Covers: "Why can't we have more/fewer challenges per week?", "Why can't we exclude votes from non-photographers/people who don't comment/kid, pet, and flower lovers?", and "Why can't I submit photos I took 10 years ago, scanned, and Photoshopped to within an inch of their little electronic lives?",

BTW, this doesn't imply that I don't contribute to at least some of those threads every week. ;-)

Well, I'm going to post something just to see if I can get myself back into reading the forums here regularly after getting home from my trip :)

All sites with discussions boards on a certain topic, or mailing lists, or whatever, have recurring questions and discussions. That's why FAQs were invented, but that never stops them. It just gives you the ability to tell people to read the FAQ and be quiet. While you have new people coming in and going through the same process everyone does in getting to know the site, they'll always have the same set of concerns to talk about. I guess DPC is a particularly bad place for this because participating in it is a bit complex, in that there's both voting and submitting photos to get used to. Maybe a newbie forum would help separate out these kinds of threads from the rest? You really can't make them go away though.

This site seems to be growing by the day and, with the high number of new members joining, they will no doubt contribute to replicating threads. Maybe there should be forums for the common rants; for example, a "Voting Beefs" forum would deflect a lot of chatter away from the challenge areaâ€Â¦
