I am in a bit of a great dilemma. I have done some free work for a customer of mine, he has said that he wants to buy me something as a thank you. I made a half joke about needing a new lens for my 350D, to my surprise he said âyeh that sounds fineâ.
So the question is, if you had a completely free choice of a Canon lens what would you pick and why. We could be talking âLâ lens quality here.

by the look of your lens....a good fast prime
say a 50mm 1.4 would be nice = med price

or a 70-200 2.8L = expensive
or a 1.4 X tele converter = low end price

If your referring to the Canon tele converter, it couldn't be used with any of the lenses listed in bob's profile so by itself it wouldn't be much good.

70-200 f4.0 L + 1.4 teleconverter might be an affordable package.

How much work have you done for this guy? And you may want to consider if he has the money... Most people not really interested in photography are really shocked when they learn how expensive just a lens can be. He may not have realized what he got himself into.

Maybe be looking at the EF 50mm 1.8 II then! :)

oops my mistake two of the lens are s mount, I thought there would be problems with the sigma and possibly the 75-300

I was thinking of the 70-200 with the converter but didn't want to sound to greedy

live and learn :)

Canon 70-200 L IS 2.8 is a very very very good lense

Canon 100mm Macro 2.8 us a stupidly ridiculously good lense

Canon 17-40 L F4 is very good as well.

Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD is also quite the shitza.

So many... so little time...

I think what you should first think about is 'how much' is a 'thank you present' for you... and your client and come up with a good lense that 'he' can afford.

cheers,

It seems to me the Canon 60mm or 100mm macro would be an obvious choice for you if you find you need to stay in the (relatively) moderate price range. I assume the sky is not the limit. If the sky IS the limit, you might want to get some seriously long glass that you'd never, ever pay for for yourself...

Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS - Because I want some good long glass, but very pricey

Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM - So I can take pictures like bear_music :-)
Plus I need it for the Current Challenge!

Edit to add link

And like arngrumur, nshapiro, brennan, keithmaniac, heida, scalvert and about 60 others of us who have it thus far? But the OP has the Sigma 10-20 so he's covered at the wide end...

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I really like the look of the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS. "ibkc" it's a LOT of work so i think this should be in budget ;-)

Thanks again.

WooooHoooo.

Just got off the phone to the guy I did the work for and he's gone for the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM.
I'm now sitting here dribbling waiting for it to arrive (sorry for the imagery).

400 2.8 IS as long as it comes with both a tripod and monopod.

Hmm...if he bought you a lense then the work wasn't free...
