This was my very first attempt at a long exposure waterfall shot. would a graduated neutral density filter help keep the detail in the sky?

or an ND filter in general, I had to come back to this spot at sunset (6 hours later) in order to get a long enough shutter speed to get the effect I wanted.

Any help would be great, I'm planning another trip down to the falls soon, it's only about 2 1/2 hours away.

and some other shots from the trip.

Great photos. Although the balance of the 1st and 2nd photos seems a bit much on the falls itself. I would try portrait to add some sky to even things out.

Use your ND filter and extend your shutter speed to blur the rotors of this windmill. Either that or stop down to about f11 @ 640 or so to add the blur.

Keep it coming!

I have a few that show the sky, but it's just way over exposed, the falls is in a "hole" so it's pretty dark in there, takes alot to get that exposed and then the sky is just white/blue. which is a shame there were beautiful colors in the sunset.

That one was to get the best sky exposure.. but not the effect I wanted in the rest of the picture

In that first one, try to get some blue in the sky not dull cloud. Take two differant exposures everytime and blend them to get huge tonal range. Those seem real dark to me. I adjusted them real quick.

Another method is shoot raw, convert the image twice, once for the sky then for the darker areas. Blend them together.

thanks peecee, that's a good idea.
and Niten, my exposure is fairly "true to the situation"
the sun had already set, it was getting pretty dark.
what I'd like is a properly exposed sky, and the longer exposure to get the effect in the water.
thanks everyone!
