I'm looking for a good (and preferably free) web slide show program. I've been trying some, and I can't find what I want.

I want something that can display at the size I want, autorun with start/stop commands.

The closest I've found is ImageWalker. Except that it doesn't have any controls on it (to pause, back, forward, etc. while running! I might be able to customize it, but I want to see what else is out there.

Note that I don't want a thumbnail index on the slideshow page--at least I don't want it there "always". Maybe for some sites I will want it, but sometimes I clearly don't want it.

Some of the flash programs look pretty good. I was impressed by SWF 'n slide, which appeared to do quite a bit. But it's also around $70.

So if you know of something applicable, please post here.

I'll also leave this thread open if you just have a great example of presentation software on your own site, even if it doesn't meet the requirements, post the link (but please note that you are posting an example that doesn't meet the above requirements!)

Thanks!

Try JAlbum.

It's a free Album creator written in Java. It has the capabilities to do what you want. It comes with a bunch of skins which most likely has something that you could use. Or if you are capable person, you can modify or program your own skin to do what you want.

Thanks--that looks really good (finally got around to trying it!)

Now I want to grab as many skins as possible. Do you know of any sites where you can download easily? It would be nice if there were a large ZIPPED set somewhere! The repository is a pain in the butt because you have to enter a code for each download. I thought by registering they would remove that restriction, but it did not.

i know it's far from perfect, but the one that's built into ps sure is simple to use. sample here.

Bump--

1) does anyone know an easier place to get skins besides the Repository?
2) what skins do you like best

With some good recommendations, i.e., if I had only 4 or 5 skins to download, the repository wouldn't be so bad. But I don't know why they don't just let you download them all at once. It's not like it's going to take a lot of space (relatively speaking)!

I use Gallery for my currently unfinished website. I like it because it's really easy to manipulate (add/delete/move photos and albums) and I can create users and password protect things. For example, in the wedding album I currently have in there, if the bride and groom (or any family members they shared the password with) log in, they get access to the fullsize versions of their photos, whereas a user who isn't logged in (or a user that isn't myself or their account) only sees the scaled down versions. Another nice feature is that if I want to I can activate a link that sends an image to Shutterfly or a few other printing services. There also features where you can allow visitors to vote or comment on images. Gallery just released v2, which I haven't researched much yet, but from the screenshots I've seen it looks a little cleaner.

what did you use for your slideshow on your opening page.

I would like to do something similar with my site.

here is a tutorial on setting up a slide show
//webmonkey.wired.com/webmonkey/03/18/index3a.html?tw=programming
just find/make button images to use as your clickable "pause / back / forward" links instead of the poor text links they use
you should be able to fit this into any site in a professional manner

Try the Windows Movie Maker. I've used to make a short video of my team in action. Ain't the best there is, but it works just fine for me.
