I'm curious as to what people are using their photography skills for. I mean, what are your goals/where are you going? There are so many talented people here and I'd love to know how these great abilities are being used. How many use photography as a means of earning a living, who else plans to and in what way? What other purposes and uses do your talents serve?

LMAO....ditto...I just want to able to take photos I can look at and say 'Hey...that's pretty good'.
P.S. Now I look at things much more differently. My job won't allow me to carry my camera with me (I'm on dirt roads 1/2 the day). But, I look around and say 'What a cool/nice photo that would make'.

I am intending on going pro eventually, mostly nature and landscapes, and my ultimate goal would be getting in Nat Geo, but that's a ways off. Right now I'm starting to get things together to start doing art shows and submitting to stock agencies.

Hi, I'm new around here - so I'll say hello and answer your question too. :)
I started out with the intention of taking pictures that didn’t suck too. However I made the mistake of having a "showing" of the photographs I took on my Weddingmoon in Alaska during my reception - and so many people started asking me to take pictures of their kids, events, houses for sale, company picnics and on and on and on that I decided to go semi-pro so that I was making something back for my time. I have diddly for equipment and run EXTREMELY low budget, and let everyone know that there are no promises for results. I like it though, and my goal is to do this full time. A kind of Jill-of-all- trades that mickeymouses lighting solutions and whose camera bag looks like the graveyard of pilfered parts and duct-tape. LOL
I have a hard time looking at photography as my other job, I still think of it as my obsessive-hobby.

I like to take pictures that are good... I just love photography and would like to maybe sell some pictures someday.

Professional for the last 10 years or so. It's not as much fun as it sounds. Turning pro was a great way to ruin a great hobby. But, I can't imgine doing anything else!

im hopin to be pro one day but not sure yet. i do get assignments n stuff to shoot. shooting for work feels different than shooting for fun. but in terms of work it still is sweet, and youre gettin better all the time.

My goal is to take photos that convey an emotion, thought, or view so that those who see it will "get" it. That's one reason why DPC is a great site for me. I like to write also, and my goals for both hobbies are somewhat the same, just through a different medium.
I'm also a very sentimental person and I like being able to use my hobby to recall events, people, or other special times in my own life.
I would love to be able to have this hobby pay for itself by occassionally doing photos for others, and by selling prints. |

| For me it is a HUDGE hobby and a part time income. I take pictures everyday. I love to do it. I love to sell them too. People saw my pictures and started asking me to take pictures of them, just like notesinstones. That is how it started. I only do two jobs a month. If I did more than that I don't think it would be fun anymore. |

Hobby. Just about learning how to use all the functions of my camera (goal 1)
Eventually I'd like to try an art show and maybe some stock - though stock is not as interesting to me
Love turquoise919 comment that it's the journey not the destination. I wish I could get out of the habit of setting myself measurable goals to work towards in an obsessional fashion. I guess I shouldn't have stopped taking those tablets.

maybe this is very naieve, but my goal is to become a pro-photographer (full time, haha) in the advertising, or fashion / portraits.
it's better to follow your dreams than standing still. that's why I've decided in april to follow a study for professional photography. I hope to finish this study in 2 1/2 years.
In november & december 2 photo's of mine are in an exposition, going thrue the big cities in Holland (Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam etc.). I don't know what the future might bring. Maybe the exposition can offer me a lot, maybe nothing comes out of it. And so be it. Nothing to loose, lots to win!

im planning to go pro, looking at universitites right now, when i first started taking photos, National Geographic was what i really wanted, right now i still think it would be an awesome job (and might attempt it), but commercial photography is a good option too.
