I got off a bit earlier and started to ride the bus toward Fort Mason, but only got as far as the GG Bridge before the Blue Angels started flying. Will post as soon as I convert RAW. |

I met Rikki there today and we probably took a thousand shots between us. We looked for you, Alice, but didn't have any way of reaching you. You're right, next time we should meet somewhere first and then all go to the place together. We should probably make sure that we all have each other's cell phone numbers as well.
I'm just going through my shots now and will post some later tonight or tomorrow. The more I look at my pictures, the more I'm impressed with the ones that Brennan posted. I'm having Bigma envy! More later...

Oh my! I finally got through the traffic and finally got home :( It took me three hours to get from SF to Fremont :( Anyway, it was great meeting Philip and yup, between he and I, we took about 1000 shots (not including the ones we were deleting along the way).
It's funny, even though I had my fantastic "white" lens, I felt like a scholl kid amongst the crowd :) I'm still green with envy seeing one guy with a 500mm L :)~
Philip, I hope the photos I took turned out ok. The afternoon spalsh of water, I hope, didn't do any permanent damage to both our cameras :(
I've got to sort through my stash and will post them as soon as I can :) |

Oh, yeah, traffic. It took an hour and a half to get form one end of SF to the other. (and it's only 7 miles wide)
As promised, here are a few pics from today. Sure was a fun day.
Sky Diver opens things up
Just one from the Red Bull Races
Larry Ellison of Oracle having fun
Blue Angels
Those folks sure can fly! |

Amazing shots guys! Too bad that one image came out blurry Faidoi. I wonder how Philip's shots came out. By the time you can take that gratuituous Golden Gate Bridge shot, the haze was already in the way :(
I wish I had a Bigma Alice:)
I'll be posting soon ;) I'm still downloading 3 gigs worth of images :( |

Here you go Faidoi.
Originally posted by BrennanOB: Rikki, I parked at the Chrissy feild lot. Heading west you drive past the Marina Green, at the next stop sign the right lane allows you to turn onto the frontage road, pass the first right which is the entrance to the yacht club, and take the next right. Park as close to the eastern end as you can, then walk across the parking lot of the yacht club and pass the club building. Then just follow the shoreline, it becomes a spit of land that acts as the breakwater for the yacht harbour. Its about a five minute walk.
Welland, I was shooting with the 50-500, the ones with alot of pylons are pretty far off down by fort mason way, so I was at 500mm, the pylons that are by themselves (shots 1,3,5) are closer and with alcatraz behind them are around 250mm more or less. |

Great shots! That extra 200mm you have over my lens is an extreme plus! It was fun shooting with you Philip. I could have used the IS today :( I should have brought my monopod!
These two shots are great side by side (since I was about a foot to your left when we shot these).

Faidoi - for shots of the Red Bull Exhibition today, I would take a chance on Fort Mason Center - behind one of the main exhibition halls. It is very close to the cones. Would probably be good for aerial shots of the rest of show as well. Too far away for any good bridge shots.
For general, overall, shots of everything, that spit of land to the east of the Yacht Club is about as good as it gets, but I was shooting all out at 400-500mm most of the day. Some overhead shots of the Blue Angels were at around 250-300mm as they were earsplitting low. That real estate is precious turf and tended to fill up well in advance.
I ended up down where that water sculpture is and had a good shot at the Air Race but not of the Bridge. It was nice and comfy.
Good luck today!

Actually, Rikki, I'm not seeing a lot of difference between your lens's reach and mine. Your shots look great (especially the composition of that Blue Angels over the bridge shot) and you got in nice and tight on those planes. I cropped almost half of my shots to get a decent close composition. Next time we get together, let's try some zooming experiments. :-)

What's up guys? I ended up shooting from down at Marina Green yesterday so that I was closer to Red Bull course and could get Alcatraz in the background for some of the shots. I'll post a few shortly.

By the way, if you're in that tiny sprit of land, be careful. Let's just say that Philip and I had an unexpected shower with our cameras :( |

I heard on our news tonight here in Perth (Western Australia) that this event is coming to us! We don't get many things like this down here so I'm really excited though I didn't hear when it will be! |

Great shots everyone! I was hoping to meet up with all of you, but didn't post to this forum as I knew I wouldn't be able to commit until yesterday morning. As suspected, the whole family came with (it was originally just supposed to be a Daddy day), resulting in our not getting there until 1pm (delays with kids and traffic).
I did walk to the end of the rocks where you all were to meet - my plan was just to yell out "anyone here from DPChallenge?" - but there were SO many people (most with nice white lenses), that I just turned around and found the family again to take some pics.
I agree with earlier comments, we should pick a specific spot to meet, as well as share cell phone numbers.
This is the Bay Area, so there will be other opportunities. Hope to meet you all in the future! |

Oh, yeah, that. We must not have been that far apart after all. My location was also hit by a couple of errant waves. Didn't get my "good" camera as it was high and dry on the tripod, but it did get my jacket, tripod carrier and the bag with my S50, extra batteries, extra CF cards, etc. I have not gathered the courage yet to see if the S50 still works.
Makka:Glad to hear Perth is getting this rather exciting event too. Enjoy! |

Hey guys/gals any help with the specs of these shots would be greatly appreciated (you know Shutter, Arp, Metering Mode, exp comp). I see Rikki is using the 70-200mm 4L as will I be (with a x1.4 TC).
ED: (We get the Angels, (Fry's/Outpost) Thunderbirds, Harriers etc... next weekend)
These shots are so nice and blue and I always have issues blowing the sky out...
Great shots by the way... :)
Thanks...
Andy

I haven't posted any pics for this event, but in general (for me) the higher ap's (f/16+) render richer blueskys.

I just wanted to post some shots quickly yesterday, but I'll go back in now to fill in the data. I set my exposure manually and left it at the same values all day so that I could shoot quickly. It was brighter to the left side than the right, so my bridge shots came out too bright. I compensated somewhat by shooting RAW, but if I had to do it again, I would probably just shoot in AV at f/5.6 and let the camera determine the shutter speed.
Stats coming up shortly...
