I'm looking at a tripod with a head mount of 1/4" x 15. Does the 15 refer to the length of the thread? I need to mount a ball head with a 3/8" female thread. I can buy a 1/4" x 20 to 3/8" converter. Would this work and will the 15 to 20 make a difference? First tripod assembly purchase so all help/knowledge is appreciated.

the 15 refers to the pitch of the thread, 15 threads per inch, but I'm a machinist and I've never heard of a 1/4-15 thread. the normal pitches are 1/4-20 or 1/4- 28. And if it is 1/4-15, then a 1/4-20 adapter would not work.

I checked on adorama again and it says 1/4"x15. I then looked at b&h and their's said 1/4"x20. So I'll assume b&h is correct. I had never heard of a 1/4"x15 before this.

Yeah, I thought that was a bit odd myself, if it is 1/4-20 (which sounds more likely) then you should be able to find an adapter. But just in case, when you first try to screw it on, be gentle, and if it doesn't go on easily, don't try to force it... it'll really mess up the screw.
