Has anyone bought a pre-canned web template?

I have my own web server and have attempted to make my own site. I have never been too interested or very skilled in web design. Problem is, it looks very amateur.

I want to get the polished look, will continue to host my own site, and I have the web design tools necessary.

I see web templates for sale for $40.00 - $60.00 but I am unsure what I need to have once I order one. I run an Apache web server.

I've recently been messing around with a program called postnuke (google it). It's pretty cool. It's basically a shell program and then people have developed modules (added on software) to go with it. There are about a billion different themes and modules and different things you can do, and it's all free. Elementary schools use it alot because it has things like:

An Events Calendar
A forum
User Registration
Photo Galleries with self generating thumbnails
E-mail system
Private message system
User ability to post "News" to the main page which is seperated into searchable categories.

You'll need a database in order to use it, and there's a learning curve, but it might be worth looking into.

If you're looking at this still then 2 things you should definitely look at are:
Mambo CMS (Content Management System) and
Gallery (//gallery.menalto.com)

Together you can built not only a fresh and easily updateable website, but there are alos loads of free development modules being designed. Try searching for mambo and template in Google.
One of the modules is Gallery so you can easily integrate a photo database into the site.

Actually, skip Mambo and go with Joomla!. The core development team left the Mambo project and created Joomla! when Miro started to get more involved with the project.

All (or most) of the Mambo components will work with Joomla!, since it is all the same code.
