Maybe it'll be a Plan. See you Saturday?

I should be able to make it down to Fort Point on Saturday as well. Maybe we should all wear something so that we can recognize each other. I'm in favor of those saffron scarves that Manny uses in his portraits. ;-) Actually, I look very similar to the image on my profile image, so if anyone recognizes me, please come up and give me a huge kiss. Then some kind of self-introduction would probably be appropriate. See you Saturday!

Well, if you see a baby blue Prius in the parking lot, you'll know I'm in the neighborhood.

Unless they change this by still be the best vantage, unless you are on a boat in the bay. Granted you can pretty much see the whole show almost everywhere on the SF Bay.

Those with shorter lenses may want to hang out near the Marina. Others may have more suggestions for better locations.

I'll be there too... look for the guy with the crazy spiky hair driving an Isuzu Rodeo and that 70-200mm lens hanging off his neck :) LOL!

I went down and shot the preliminaries today, and will post up later if I got any thing good, but I found the spot to shoot from. Park at Chrissy feild, and walk past the yacht club to the point that protects the harbor. You get an unobstructed view as the planes tip in over the gate and make the runs through the pylons. At least today it was less crowded than the green, and it looked like the pro photographers covering the event, video and still, were out there. Of coures now I feel the need for something big and white so I dont look like the novice I am.

do you think fort point is not a good spot? i'm debating that as well because aquatic park is over a mile away...

oh and i have one of 'em big white lenses but mine is like a polaroid compared to the f2s that these pros have :)

If you want the shot of the Blue Angels and the bridge, Fort Point is fine, but for the races it is too far from the action. These guys are about twenty feet off the water and cutting in and out of the pylons which are set up between the Marina Green and Fort Mason. Fort Point would be a long shot to get the action.

anyone else thinking of meeting at chrissy instead? i'll be at fort point at 10:30 just to be sure...

Looks like we need to make a choice as a group if we want to meet each other tomorrow. Many people have already said that they will be meeting at Fort Point, so it's probably too late to change those plans at the last minute. I'm planning on going there in the morning, but am certainly not opposed to meeting at Chrissy Field if everyone else wants to do that instead.

If people would like to discuss this by phone, I'd be happy to be the focal point of the phone chain. Feel free to PM me your phone number and I'll call to confirm where you'd like to meet and when and then share the consensus with the others in this thread and by phone. Looking forward to meeting you guys tomorrow!

If the vantage point is better at Chrissy Field, well, that's where I'll be. Thanks for the reconnaisance, BrennanOB. Sounds good.

Then, if they start at about 1pm, we should be there at least by 12 if not sooner, to capture parking places?

Edited to add - wow, BrennanOB, great preliminaries! (and I was stuck in a boring meeting all afternoon)

Good to know. As I won't be there on Sat. Not sure if the they will still use the pylons on Sun for the exhibition.

At what range did you shoot those at? Just wondering which lens to bring.

Brennan: Can you tell me exactly how to get there? I want to be at Chrissy Field to get these shots too :)

Here are some fairly specific directions to the Crissy Field parking lot. It is about opposite Halleck but the parking lot is not on the map below. However, it is obvious once you get there. There's a one-way entrance in and another out. Lyon Street heading to the deadend at the Bay takes you to the Yacht Club public parking lot :

Sounds like we don't need a phone chain at all. I'm all for Chrissy Field and will try to get there by noon. See you guys there!

Rikki, I parked at the Chrissy feild lot. Heading west you drive past the Marina Green, at the next stop sign the right lane allows you to turn onto the frontage road, pass the first right which is the entrance to the yacht club, and take the next right. Park as close to the eastern end as you can, then walk across the parking lot of the yacht club and pass the club building. Then just follow the shoreline, it becomes a spit of land that acts as the breakwater for the yacht harbour. Its about a five minute walk.

Welland, I was shooting with the 50-500, the ones with alot of pylons are pretty far off down by fort mason way, so I was at 500mm, the pylons that are by themselves (shots 1,3,5) are closer and with alcatraz behind them are around 250mm more or less.

Two shots of the "Fat Albert" Hercules C-130 transport taken in GG Park as it flew through the overcast clouds today.

Gee, seems most of San Francisco and surrounding counties were at the air races today. Rikki, I looked for spiky hair guys, but stopped after about the first 20... <:)

Anyhow, I arrived at about 10:45 and ended up at the very end of that spit of land BrennanOB talked about and took - er - one or two pictures. Parking lots were already full, but a little secret: The exploratorium parking lots were still nearly empty at that time.

And, no, I didn't see anyone who resembled a DPCer alll day long.

Maybe for future explorations (barring forests, and the like where we can tell ourselves from the trees) we should meet at an uncrowded place and then make our way to the photo spot.

Hope you all had as much fun as I did. I'll post a few pics in a bit.
