I bought a D70 last year and did not get the 18-70mm kit lens with it. Instead, I got a super-cheap Sigma 28-90mm, which is my widest lens. I have heard the kit lens is a nice piece of glass, so I am considering buying it now. I would like to be able to use it for some landscapes and some portrait work. My question is, are there any other lenses you would reccommend fr around $300 as an alternative?

In that price range and trying to stay wide it is hard to beat the 18-70 kit lens. Now if you want to step up to around $500 then there are more choices. Many of these you still loss the wide end. I'm looking at this one but I also have the Nikon 12-24.

yeah, I would really like to get down around that 18mm range, I think that kit lens will be hard to beat. |

It's so handy the kit lens. It's very nice to be able to get down to 18mm for wide angle shoots (with minimum barrel distortion), and 2 secnds after you're at 70mm doing a close-up.
If you need wide angle for diferent reasons, for example landscape only or mostly, take a peek at the sigma 10-20mm. It's in my wishing list. Another one but it is abose your budget I guess is the 15-55mm, a very fine and sharp lens.

I hear a lot of happy Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 owners. There is a small chance you get a real dog of a lens but overall the owners are happy. Might be a bit more expensive.
