Hi, I'm trying to start a friendly debate (although I figure it will go hostile) about John Bolton and the UN...
First, I need to confirm that the following is true:
1) President Bush appointed John Bolton to be ambassador to the UN.
2) John Bolton has said "There is no such thing as the United Nations, there is only the international community, which can only be led by the only remaining superpower, which is the United States."
Just want to make sure I have my facts straight...
So my questions are:
1) Is the UN effective in fulfilling it's role?
2) Is the USA in general (or just the current administration) trying to undermine the UN and is it right in doing so? |

Yup he did, and another choice statement(quoted from the London times), as well. For example: âIf the UN Secretariat building in New York lost ten storeys, it wouldn ât make a bit of difference.â
1)Yes.
2)Yes.

I would highly suggest seeing The Girl in the Cafe (2005). I realize that its fiction, but it is very relevant to the discussion of the UN. |

Yeah. The UN often disagrees with US policy especially lately so, time to take them out of the equation.
Bolton has also said:
"the United Nations can be a useful instrument in the conduct of American foreign policy"
and
"American policy cannot continue to be crippled by a misguided insistence on unanimity in the UN Security Council."
A man with this mentality has no place in UN deplomacy. What a shame. |

Congratulations to Mohammed El Baradai and the International Atomic Energy Agency for winning the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize for it's work on preventing nuclear energy from being used for military purposes. El Baradai is Director General of the IAEA and stood up to John Bolton, when he was Undersecretary of State for Disarmement Affairs, and to the Bush administration, as to their false claims that Iraq and Saddam Hussein had nuclear weapons. Bolton and the Bush administration even tried to get El Baradai replaced in his post as DG of IAEA but they got no support from the 30 or so nation states that make up the IAEA, including Tony Blair and Great Britain. |

Interesting ... I hear Greenpeace is rather dismayed with the choice. |

Why is that? Does GP not like the work that the IAEA is doing? |
