I have this great idea for the Celebration challenge, but I'm not sure if I can do this.
I need a white background. The only thing I have is a big piece of white paper. I'm pretty sure I can't shoot the photo with a clean white background. Can I make it white if it's light gray or is that a reason for DQ? |

you could just use curves to make it whiter.
The background was a creamy colour in this pic, and all i did was increase the white point with curves. Of corse if your highlights are blown it makes it much worse by doing this. |

If it's a featureless light grey, it shouldn't be a problem if you shift it to white. Based on past examples, you're flirting with DQ if you erase details by forcing the BG to white.

You wouldn't exactly be removing the background, just changing the colour of the existing one. I'm pretty sure that that is not grounds for a DQ. Even if you got rid of some small wrinkles or creases in the paper, I believe that would still be OK, as they would only be classed as minor distracting elements. If, for instance, you had people windows in the background and got rid of them, then that would likely be a DQ.
Edit: Oh bother, beaten to it and by a much better explanation as well.
