I played around with photographing smoke last night. I used my 105mm macro lens and an SB800 flash with gels. Here are a few examples

I set up a table in my garage with an ash tray... But up a black cloth background... Rolled a paper napkin up tightly so that it would burn slowly... Turned out the lights... and shot away.

That is really cool stuff. It is so cool that I may have to go into my garage and try it. Nice work.

Those are Great Pictures, I wish you would have presented them w/out the border/embossed logo though-- (just Nitpicking)

Thanks. I agree about the border. I used the new "upload print" feature.

I happen to like the border. It sets the smoke apart. Rather than just having a picture of smoke, it looks more like a poster this way.

So I say... just ignore the naysayers. :-)

(unless you plan to print them and put them into their own "real" frame)

Holy smoke! Those our great shots. I agree with dwterry, I like the borders.

These *are* great shots. What was the lighting situation?

I like the photos, but I'm not sure about the titles. Why not title them like "smoke" or some other term you're trying to get across, then put your name a bit smaller (that is, if your goal is to sell them)?

When I submitted the prints for review, I got an Admin. note saying basically they would prefer them without the border, but the prints were approved. So, I test printed a couple and ...the Admin. were right. They didn't look good printed. I have since redone them w/out the borders.

To answer Tim's question, they were shot in the dark, with the flash being the only lighting.
