I know the photo is terrible, but i wanted something basic to start with. What do you think?

You seem to have worked it out pretty well, what method did you use?
On this kind of photo, you can use Hue/Saturation/Lightness and remove only certain colour ranges, looks like thats how you might have done it.

I think it would look better if you didn't crop it so close. The selective desat job is good though.

i used photostudio and then selected the magic wand to select similar colours, then did the hue/saturation/lightness as u said
