Hi -
I'm a little confused on the filters allowed issue - i thought the new rule was if the filter was applied to the whole photo it was allowed, but then I just read effects filters cannot be used? Specifically, I'm asking about "black & white" - "antique" and "negative". Are these are considered ok? are some of these allowed but not others? Any help would be appreciated as I need to know before submitted for the "four" challenge. Thanks |

Convering color to B+W (grayscale) is a color mode change and is allowed, as is converting the color/gray to a negative image.
I am unfamiliar with "antiquing" though. If it refers to applying a sepia-tone to a grayscale image to make it look like an old photo, that IS allowed. If it applies dust and scratch effects to make it look "distressed" it IS NOT allowed.
In general, if the operation MOVES pixels it is not allowed (with the exception of those listed on the full rules page). If it just changes the COLOR of the pixels it is allowed, but the operation must be applied to all the pixels simultaneously. |

Hate to make this more confusing, but here is the rules and it looks like dust and scratching is allowed.
Filters: The use of filters (or non-Photoshop equivalent) is strictly limited. Any filter or stand-alone utility designed and used to preserve the integrity of the image and/or reduce the effects of noise, scratches, etc, are permitted. These include but are not limited to the Sharpen, Unsharp Mask, and Dust & Scratches filters, and standalone image cleanup utilities such as NeatImage. However, no effects filters may be applied to your image, with the exception of Noise and Gaussian blur, the two of which are allowed. Any filter permitted by this rule must be applied uniformly to the entire image. Selective application of the filter is prohibited.
Best to send email to Drew to find out for sure.

The Dust&Scratches filter is used to remove artifacts and restore the integrity of the image. What I said was NOT allowed is any filter which might ADD dust&scratches or other artifacts to make the image look old and worn. Hope that clarifies things... |

Works for me...
And... not trying to start something here, but.... Anybody know of a site where we can manipulate the bezeezus out of the image as we please? I am _NOT_ complaining. I am happy with the rules as they are. Just wondering if there was a place if I did want to try my had at it, or we could recommend to folks who are not happy with the current rules. (Which does not include me. No hate mail please... ) |
