Recently, I went to buy a 1GB CF Card (Sandisk make) for my Canon S1 camera. The vendor asked if I wanted the genuine card. Does this mean that fake/Duplicate/inferior cards are also available?
How can we find if a card is genuine or duplicate?

I guess people can replace stickers on no-named branded cards with Lexar or Sandisk or something.

Even a regular Sandisk can be replaced with a Extreme II or Extreme III sticker and you wouldn't even know. Some SD cards have the card size printed on the back, but not sure about CF cards.

Buy from a reputable dealer and you should be ok.

I'm not sure, but sounds like they either: 1) Aren't so great with words and meant to ask whether you wanted a name brand or cheap one. 2) Want to pay more?

Why would any seller (especially those that carry illegitimate stock) in their right mind admit to having something that is not genuine?

As with canned goods, stores carry their "house brand" which have been made for them by a major manufacturer.

For example, Ritz Camera sells a CF card under their label which is made for them by Lexar. I bought house-brand labels froma major mail-order office supplier, which are made for them by Avery, but which cost about 40% less than "genuine" Avery labels.

The sales person was probably trying to save you a few bucks by offering the "generic quivalent" to what you asked for.

I'd always buy my cards locally from someone I can trust! I'd rather not buy them over the net or ebay or anything! I would much rather have the 'real' thing than a cheap import! Just for peace of mind! :)

Sounds to me like a shady company preying on naive customers by suggesting that they need to buy a more expensive card (or actually admitting that they carry counterfeits). Yes, he could've just been offering a generic, but the wording leads me to believe otherwise. Stick with a reputable dealer and you shouldn't have a problem. I usually buy camera memory from Newegg or Zipzoomfly. It's hard to beat a 1GB Kingston Elite Pro for $54.60 shipped after an $8 rebate.
