I am thinking about buying an ALPS printer. The main purpose of this is to print my own water-slide decals for my diecast models "ATD models"

1/ Anyone have any working knowledge or advice for these printers?
2/ Has anyone else got any suggestions on other types of printers for this purpose.
3/ Has an ALPS printer got any useful applications in photography.

Thanks in advance. Tony

I had an Alps...just got rid of it (gave it to a friend)...bummer, could have sold it to you.

They do some amazing metallic work. Are great for the fact that they have white cartridges and can print a white base first.

Printings on their photo paper is unbelievable durable.

ie: soaked the photograph in a sink full of hot water for 20 minutes. Took a green scrubbie to it. That had a noticeable affect but even that took a fair amount of effort. Soaked it for a while longer. If I recall correctly I soaked it over night. Very minimal affect and that only to the texture of the paper which finally started to seperate a bit and I was able to peel the backside of the paper off.

The CONS:

-Slow
-Inefficient cartridges
-Noticeable banding on prints

Had those three factors not weighed in I'd be of the opinion all printers should thrown out and replaced with Alps.

Thanks for that. Do you know where I could find another one?

Ebay, though you'll have to download drivers from the web for 2000/XP

Mine was an MD-1300

My friend might still have it and may be willing to sell it. Not sure what shipping to NZ would be though.

But you might want to try to find an MD-5000 + Dye-Sub module. Will cost you more but not only did it do the metallic inks but it did gold or silver overlays on top of colors so you had full tonal range metallics.

Apparently I've found there are many photo printers that can do the job I want. Does anyone know much about the Olympus P440 or owns one? The Olympus P10 is supposed to be good to for smaller prints.
