I have a friend of mine who has put a LOT of time and effort into getting ready for a body building competition this weekend (actually, it is the "figures" competition ... she needs to look buff, but feminine at the same time).
After going through all of the time and expense in getting ready for the competition, it would be nice to have something to remember it all. So we're going to take pictures on Thursday.
Anyway, I was just wondering if any DPCers have any experience at this that they would like to offer?
I would assume that she already knows the poses. She needs to be practicing her poses for the competition. So what matters more to me is lighting.
My current thinking on the subject is this: I want to use at least two off camera flashes (or strobes if I have electrical power nearby). One one of them, I want to use a softbox or umbrella to evenly light her. But on the other, I want to use a barebulb flash because I specifically *want* to see specular highlights - those highlights well help define her curves.
Am I right? Wrong? Are there other opinions? Whatdya think?

Check with Kosmikkreeper. He shoots massage photos and would habitually deal with that type of lighting. |

I shot a bodybuilding competition earlier this year and have 2 more coming up in the next few weeks. Main problem I encountered was glare from the oils they use on the skin. Also, the tanning product they use looks HORRIBLY unnatural except when under stage lights, so you may want to talk to your friend about that. Ask her not to use the tanning product for your private shoot.
She will know her poses, your job will be to capture them in a way that's most flattering. Choose a nice outdoor location with even light and try some very low, or very high angles for a cool look.
If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to help.

I'd would try to shoot with softboxes to prevent hot spots. And I would shoot in RAW so I could adjust the skin tones if necessary.
Just my $0.02
