I just started getting into serious photography. I bought my camera (7D) about a month ago and I'm still learning what it can do. I got with the camera a Minolta AF 28-85mm 3.5-4.5 Macro lens. Since I didn't know much (only what I've researched), I thought I got a good deal. Only to find out recently the macro function doesn't work. But, it's all good, I did get a good deal regardless. I didn't know what macro was till I saw the pictures on here and WOW is all I could think, I wanna be able to do THAT!!! I see now I'll need a macro lens eventually.
Well, here is my dilema/question. I have since bought 2 lenses and was wondering if these 2 (should I say 3?) should be able to accomplish what I want. I photo mostly sports, but I'm going to Colorado in 10 days and plan on taking some killer photos in the mountains while I'm there. I probably won't have time to buy a new one till I get back, but any input on what I should get (I'd like to keep costs down) when I do.
The 2 I bought are:
Sigma 18-50mm 3.5-5.6 DC (I've used this one and loved the photos it took at practice)
Sigma 55-200mm F4-5.6 DC (I'll get it tomorrow)
Should I dump these 2 and buy 1 or just buy a 'specialty' lens?3
Thanks for the inputs.

P.S. Please try not to confuse me more than I already am. I am a quick learner, but I'd like to take it a little slower than past hobbies (which is what this will be for me).

Hello Eddie congrats on your new hobby.. ok let me start off by saying that this is just MY opinion and not to be taken as gospel...

firstly remember that lenses last longer than bodies so you should buy decent glass i always say. Sigma make some nice glass agreed, the 105 macro is a fav of mine but I prefer to go with makers lenses and minolta do make some very nice lenses my friend uses the 7D. here is a small list of good minolta glass IMO

1- 17-35mm f2.8D approx ¥50,000 (sorry its in japanese yen)
2- 24-105 f3.5-45 D approx ¥55,000
3- 100-300 f4.5-56 D approx ¥70,000
4- AF Macro 100mm f2.8 D approx ¥70,000

Seems a bit expensive but you can't beat good glass I think it is a very important part of photography depending on how serious you want to get with it.

Sigma and Tamron are starting to make real quality lenses too but you really have to get their TOP OF THE RANGE lenses to get close to maker quality IMO.

Happy hunting my friend, nice camera.

If you like the 18-50mm lens, keep it.

the 55-200 I have not heard much about.

but a good set of lenses would have:

1 wide angle lens (you have it with the 18-50, but later on maybe replace it with something wider)
1 standard zoom lens, 28-105 or 28-135
and one telephoto lens, 70-200 or 70-300 or an 80-400
and at least one prime lens (fixed focal length) 50mm or a 105mm, or an 85mm or a 24mm

this should be enough to get you started to figure out what size lenses you need for your style of shooting.

James

Sounds good. Thx for your advice. I'll keep my eyes opsn for something in that range I'd be willing to buy.

Decided to get the Sigma 18-125mm f/3.5-5.6 DC Lens first. But, it'll have to wait till I get back from Denver. Never did get my 55-200. Camera shop sent the filters, but not the camera. It's supposed to arrive THE DAY I LEAVE, :(
