Can anyone tell me how I can add a plain border to an image, say 50px, without changing the aspect ratio? If I use "add border", the aspect ratio will change slightly. I look for a way of automatically cropping the image to fit the ratio again.
Did this make any sense?

I'm using Paint Shop Pro 9, but I should be able to apply PS tips as well.

By definition, you can't. The only way you could add 50px to both sides of an image without affecting its aspect ratio would be if the aspect ratio was 1:1 (square). Otherwise, you need to add 50 pixels on the left and right sides and 63 pixels on the top/bottom to maintain a 1.25:1 aspect ratio or 70 pixels on the top/bottom to maintain a 1.4:1 aspect ratio, etc.
The other choice is to stroke the border inside your image after you've already made your crop, but be aware that this will cover up pixels that were previously part of the image. But you can't "expand" the canvas uniformly in both directions and have the aspect ratio stay the same.

To add a border without changing aspect ration in photoshop, you... Edit, Select All. Edit, Stroke (make sure "Inside" is checked and not "Outside". Then type in say "10" for pixels and the color you want, and it will just go inside the photo.

In PS I do it two ways (and there are more) but here is what I do:
First way Creating border within image
1. When you have completed your editing click on the 'rectangular Marquee tool'.
2. Drag the dotted line around your complete image.
3. Click on 'Edit' from the main menu and scroll down to 'Stroke'.
4. Under width put in X pixels (in your example 50 pixels) and below that choose the color you wish the border to be.
5. Then under location you have, Inside - Center - Outside, Choose 'Inside'. You now have a 50 pixel border that is the color of your choice.
Second way expanding canvas
1. Click on 'Image' from the main menu and scroll down to canvas size.
2. Click on 'Canvas size', it will bring up a box.
3. Under the area that says 'new size' click the box that says relative and set your parameters to pixels.
4. Under width and height enter 50 (pixels).
5. Choose the color you want. Now you have a picture with the correct aspect ratio without cropping out any of the desired picture.

Thanks, those are the methods I already thought of. It seems I can't get around some mathematics :)
I just figured out this method, which allows for only one side to be cropped, instead of both height and width:
Resize->add 100px to the longest side, but do not apply. Mark down the calculated dimension for the other side, then crop the image with the actual length and the new width. Then add the border, the aspect ratio is fine again. |
