Here is a definition from the Cambridge Advanced Dictionary:
complementary [Show phonetics]
adjective
useful or attractive together:

Anything goes I guess.

Ok, this is really bugging me! I have two pictures, I really like the blue/yellow one over the blue/orange one, but a quick scan of the internet shows most sites indicating BLUE/ORANGE as complementary colors. Seeing as the first challenge also went this way, I will go BLUE/ORGANGE. (Bummer, as I really liked the other picture better.
Sites indicating BLUE/ORANGE are complementary:
Site 1
Site 2
Site 3
Site 4
Site 5
Sites indicating BLUE/YELLOW are complementary:
Site A
Yuck. Next time, Site Council - clarify what you want. :-) |

Damn, I didn't read the posts for a day and I was thinking yellow/blue not yellow/purple. I've changed my entry 3 times, so I think what I have now is good and if somebody is going to diss me for not seeing it as their interpretation, then so be it. Isn't that the way it usually is anyway???
Good luck everybody!!!

This may sound like a silly question but can the submission have more than 2 colors in it? I mean if the main subjects are complementary and then there is for example sky and clouds in the background would I be marked down for having more than the 2 complementary colors? |

Officially B&W aren't even colors. They're tints and tones... :D

As long as the complementary colors are "carrying" the composition, I don't think the presence of other colors is gonna be a problem. It's pretty hard to shoot a 2-color photograph outside of a studio environment...

Site Council has nothing to do with the challenge topics/wording, except in the mnost general sense. Drew and Langdon do that. For obvious reasons, actually; if SC were responsible for framing and selecting the challenges, they'd have a considerable conflict of interest since they also participate in them...
As for D&L, it's pretty clear they WANT ambiguity. It's all about giving people room to run their own course. We very rarely have precisely-defined challenges.

Looks like an awful lot of Red/Green in our future! Perhaps a splash of Blue/Yellow. ;^) BTW, Red/Blue did grab the 11 and 12 spots.

Actually, according to defination, Complementary colors consist of the three primary colors (Red, Yellow & Blue) and the the color the other two colors would make.
Exp:
RED and (Yellow+Blue = GREEN)
YELLOW and (Blue + Red = PURPLE)
and the last one would be
BLUE and (Red + Yellow = ORANGE)
That's the defination of complementary colors anyway. I'm however, sure there will be a lot that don't follow the difination.

Hate to be a stickler here but can we call the colors by their proper names please...
RED is complimentary to CYAN
GREEN is complimentary to MAGENTA
BLUE is complimentary to YELLOW
