I did something in my photoshop and i have no idea what I did. I open a picture that is 1.6m and when I open it into photoshop is turns into 9m. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it. I still have the problem. I don't know what I did, or how to fix it. HELP ME PLEASE.

So photoshop says its 9m or after you save it from photoshop it becomes 9m?

I think photoshop, when you are in photoshop, I should say, lists the uncompressed size of the image along with the file size which is compressed...especially in jpg.

Maybe sounds like it is converting it to TIF upon opening.. does it take a lifetime to boot up?

Relax Cora, you didn't do anything wrong. First and foremost, did you save your original, untouched file so that you can go back and start over in case you really screw anything up?? Always work on a copy of your original file.

When you open a file in photoshop, depending on what you do to edit it, the resulting file can be much larger than the image you start with (adding a layer, for instance).

Please let us know exactly what you did to your image. Be as detailed as you can.

I did make a copy before I worked on it. In the file folder it tells me that it is 1.6m. The copy and the original. When I open any picture it converts to 9m

Are you referring to the display at the bottom of the picture's window when you're viewing it in photoshop? I believe that is a reflection of how much RAM PS is using to store/display the image while you have it up on screen. Don't worry about it because it does not indicate how large the file will be when you save it.

No it is when I go to change the pixel size and there is a thing above in red that tells you what size it was and is after you change the size.

lets see...
NEF Raw - starts at about 5M
I do levels, sharpen, play with some tonal correction ... save as TIF
Finish at about 32M (I keep my layers in the TIF in case I need to "re-address something)

Heck I have some "working" tifs right now that are 140M

I dont find this abnormal at all

I just opened a 5 mp file and it shows 23m in red, but don't worry it does not save it at that size. It must be something to do with working the photo in the program. i tried it with a few more and they all show high #'s in the program. I would not worry about it.

But when I try to resize to enter my picture it won't let me do it unless my picture is tiny tiny tiny

How can I tell if it is changing to TIFF When I open. It doesn't take a long time but long enough.

The Photoshop file format (PSD) imcludes proprietary compression. When the file's closed it gets smaller.

When PS opens a file, one of the size displays at the bottom includes the size as if all layers were completely filled with pixels, uncompressed. For example, if you open a 1MB file, and create a new layer and clone out a telephone pole, the file will show it being 2MB, even though you've only added a few pixels. When you close the file, it will be something like 1.1MB, with all the "blank space" in the new layer compressed.

Are you trying to save it as a different size as in save for web or simply reduce the size of your photo. Are you changing the pixel per inch or the resolution? How are you doing this? I think you are trying to adjust the image with image size under the image tab. This would be wrong. Click file them save for web then you can adjust the size and quality there and the image should look right for you
