I have Windows 98 is intalled on C driveand recently installed Windows XP Professional on E drive (D being a scratch diskfor PS).I really love XP and increasing find 98 as unstable. Now i have option of choosing bewteen 98 and XP whenever i start my PC.

I was thinking of installing Xp on C drive as well so that when i start I again have option of choosing OS,(I know both OS will be XP only).

Why do i want this silly setup ? When i can have just XP for my whole system.

Well i want to keep XP on my E drive only for Photoshop and no other software.
While i want to install XP on C drive that has 98 for other software except adobe photoshop. I would surf internet from C drive and when i want to use Photoshop i can restart my PC and choose E drive .

I know this system sounds silly and strange but on paper i felt this is possible i.e two partion having same OS.I just want to know will it work.

I like to also know since I have a windows 98 on C drive is it possible to like uninstall it i.e no OS on C drive just only one OS i.e XP on E drive.
I have installed software zillion times but never messed with OS.

Please let me know web site where i can get great information on assembling PC i.e How to choose Mother Board,How to know what is maximum RAM ur PC can take,What Video Card to choose etc.

I plan to assemble a new PC as my current PC is not worth spending money on. I came to know ,maximum RAM i can install on this is 512 MB and it has two sloths only which currently are filled with two 128. Two 256 MB RAM will cost me like 100$.

Okay, I have no Idea why you would want to do this, and I'm not going to help you on principle of making your life actually easier.

Just install XP, and get rid of buggy format-my-system-and-start-over-with-a-clean-registry windows 98 and have a happy life.

Whatever software it is that you think won't run on XP, it's just not worth it.

Yes it is possible to install multiple OS's for specific applications -- no, it will not make your system's sustained performance.

The reasons why it won't make the system faster can get about as technical as you want to go -- but the short answer in two terms -- pre-emptive multitasking and virtual memory.

The pre-emptive multitasking allows the OS to concentrate on the program running, knowing the any other program running will let it know when it has something it needs to do. The keeps the OS from having to constantly pass control to the next application -- just in case it has something it needs to do. Your benefit as the user is the program running will have full access to the system unless some other program wants to do something. As long as you don't have programs doing things in the background -- you are using the system to it's fullest potential.

Virtual memory allows the OS to page out (swap) sections of memory that are not currently active -- if a program is not actively doing anything, the memory it occupies and uses will be paged to the hard disk. Your benefit as the user is only those programs that are active are taking up your memory -- everything else is on the harddisk, just like it was before it was started.

There is a perceived slowdown when first starting an application (such as photoshop) because it does take a few minutes for the OS to recognize that everything else is no longer active and page it out. That's why I said your proposed configuration would not benefit your sustained performance. It will affect the performance for the first few minutes photoshop is active, but not after it has 'settled in'.

Quite frankly, as you have said, with just 256MB of memory -- more memory is going to affect the speed of your system more than anything else you could do. Your max of 512MB would not be enough to relieve the memory bottle-neck, but it would certainly help -- and it is cheaper than a second copy of WinXP. ;)

Post what it is you want you new PC to be able to do well -- prioritized would be great -- and I'm sure there are a few of us that can direct your attention in profitable directions.
