I've never really worked much with flash. Most of my pictures are taken outdoors in the daylight, but I'd like to give flash photography a go. I'm on a budget and trying to make a decision. I've got about $100 pocket money to spend, so do I:
Buy the Sigma E500 ST DG from Amazon for $149 ($99 after the $50 gift certificate that I have) or buy a Canon 380EX off of ebay for about $100 (sometimes less)?

| Im like you and don't use the flash all that much. I have a 380 EX and the same camera and it all seems to work fine for me. Have had the 380 for 6+ years with no problems. |

I have the 420EX and it works well, but from what I have heard I wish I had got the Sigma 500 ST DG, seems a lot closer to the 550EX
If that is any help??

I have the 420EX too, but sometimes (with fast shutterspeeds) the shutter won't go down anymore. I'm not sure if this is a known "bug" or if it's just the combination of my camera with my flash.

that's called your flash sync. You can't use a flash with a speed of higher than 1/250 on your rebel or any other canon, or even most other cameras (save the d70) for that matter.

| sorry petrakka, that's not true. with the flash on the cam self the shutterspeed won't go faster than 1/200, but with this external flash I can use faster shutterspeeds. |

| maybe the flash sync is 1/200 then. yea with non dedicated off cam flashes the sync doesnt always apply, i didnt know the rebel did that too though. |

the flash ( 420ex, 550ex ) should have a high speed sync setting which will allow you to use it over the Xsync speed of 1/200th - this would be mainly for fill flash, and not using it as the main source of light. i use it this way quite a bit ( 550ex on camera ). as was the case with my dairy entry.
