I'm looking for a good high key backdrop. I was thinking vinyl would be longer lasting than paper, and easier to obtain (friend owns a sign shop so could get a big piece inexpensively).
Are there any drawbacks I should be aware of before spending money??

Vinyl might be too shiny. If you do use it watch the lights.

Vinyl makes a cool material to put a product on top of, especially when the subject is wet and the water can bead on the surface, but I'm not sure about vinyl as a backdrop. I also find that vinyl material looks better in bright colors than in white, but that might be a personal preference. Why not just use a canvas or muslin white backdrop? If you light it well, you can make great high key shots that way.
