Well,
My lens adventure continues. Sold the kit and the 28-135IS lens and got a Tamron 28-75, so far I'm impressed with the sharpness. Ran some tests of it here at various focal lenghts and aperatures. Unfortunately, they are handheld.
I plan on testing various lenses with the Yahoo group so keep checking my webpage. This Saturday is my 70-200 f2.8L vs Canon 200mm f1.8 primes and Sunday will be a B+W vs cheap Hoya CPL.

great stuff Tom!.. Told you you weren't done with lenses yet :).

On a lighter note this past weekend I covered my cousin's Bachelor party for him since his wedding is a last minute thing. End of the weekend Camera bag ends up missing along with all my gear and the Grooms work laptop. What a way to start off a marriage eh?

So.. I'll be out of commission for the next 4 months or so until I save up enough cash to get me started again. I now have an early New Year's resolution.. to keep my camera more than a year :)

I'll keep my ear to the ground for any things you guys/gals do so I won't lose touch :). So much for a 50mm 1.8 i just bought and didn't use.. gotta love all of lifes lil challenges.. After this ordeal i better score like 6+ on future post :D.. only kidding I'd just be with my camera.

Got enough lenses there yet, Tom? ;)

Wow Raul, that really sucks! (I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that).. I really would have absolutely no idea what I would do if I got my bag stolen.. I'd be extremely pissed!! You seem to be handling it well, but maybe you've had some time to blow off the steam. Maybe you can use someone's old camera for now? I don't have any other cameras, but perhaps your relatives might have some old SLRs or P&S digis laying around? I hope you guys find out what happened and recover everything.. not only for your camera, but the photos as well! Those aren't even replaceable! Ouch.. :(

As for my corner of the woods, I revamped my photo blog.. and I was on Kodak's POTD for Wednesday.. here're a couple shots of the whole thing, provided by photodude :).

Oh, that's sooo sad :( I am so sorry Raul. Well, you can join the Canon club now... if you want to! :)

Anyhow, I'll be hoping you can get a new camera by the holiday season!

Raul,
I'm so sorry to hear about your camera. I hope you find a replacement set up soon.

Thanks everyone.. I do have some money saved up for was to be a nice 2.8 tele lens, but whatever.. I'll most likely be going Canon so I won't be a sore thumb in the group :). Maybe I can mooch off Tom's library of lenses when we get together :).

Brian,
As far as me taking it.. I look at it this way material possesions come and go but my passion for the subject can only get stronger. I mean I had a nice setup going and put a nice dent in my wallet but lifes to short to be upset over something like that. Great pic btw on you blog. Also gives me time to fine tune my web design for my photo webby.

Arie,
Heh.. If i'm lucky it'll be a gift for me from me at Christmas :).. AWWSSOOMMEE A CAMERA.. HOW'D YOU KNOW!! :D. I'll see how things play out.

Tom,
Can't wait to see more of your outtings man.. keep it up.. It can only lead towards extra cash for some new lenses :).

Thanks again everyone, now I must get ready for a wedding I'm in tomorrow :).. not mine.. just I'm in it.. Take care everyone.

Raul,
If you are thinking about getting Canons, which body were you thinking about? The Rebel XT? 20D?

09/12/2005 01:10:33 AM · #285
Either or.. I'm not to sure yet.. the 5D looks nice but, I need something with 5+ FPS for sports and what not..

I'm not sure about the 20D though.. Arie has had some problems with hers soo.. :) either one though

I had some focus issues, but everyone else seems to be doing great with their 20D. I asked a lot of other 20D owners, and I was the odd man out. So, I think it's a great camera for FPS and 3200 ISO if you need night time speed too! :)

Eric, John, Chuck,

Are you safe from the fires? Everyone else okay?
09/30/2005 01:34:53 AM · #289
Everythings quite on my side of the neighborhood.. well besides this recurring nightmare i call work :). How about you?
09/30/2005 04:40:38 AM · #290
I'm near the center of San Fernando Valley so fire danger minimal unless I go to it. Was driving today and my eyes are now blood shot and hurt from all the smoke in the valley.

Except for all the falling ash and very thick smoke, everything is okay here.

I will email John Falk to see if he's okay. I think he's south of the 101, so he should be ok. Glad to hear you are all okay. The ash is pretty bad in Glendale. I can't imagine how bad it must be closer to you!!!

Good to hear from you all.

Raul, work is boring here too! I want to be a full time photographer already!

Glad to hear everyone is okay so far - are you in view of the fires Eric?

Well, got me an N, my name for the Canon 1D Mark II N.
Nice camera, I'm waiting for Rawshooters to support the N and in the meantime, shooting in JPEG. I'm also keeping the DR as a second camera.
I've done a couple of outings. Take a look here.

Very nice images.. you gotta be very happy with that monster :).. Can't wait to get mine next year. lol yeah.. one can only wish to have one of those bad boys..

Can't wait to see more Tom!! any more offers from your second job? hehe
10/04/2005 01:55:41 AM · #296
well, I'm shooting an event for the Gene Autry museum and their upcoming traveling gun collection. Both are for pay. Also, a drug rep wants me to shoot his pre wedding pictures (I'm doing it as a favor in exchange for a light reflector).

That's all, I'm not interested in doing too much work as it isn't fun to take shots that doesn't catch your artistic eye. Now if you can do art and get paid, that would be nice.

I still don't expect to quit my day job for photography.

BTW, any thoughts/timeline on your next camera purchase?

cool, I dunno about weddings.. I recently had to be in one and the photographer didn't look to happy.. seemed to routine, like their were in a assembly line. Pictures still haven't been done. Been over a month.

I'm giving myself about month and a half more to have enough for a decent 20D setup or a 1D markII or N..

I will be doing a lot of freelance for the city paper and college paper along with outtings.. so either way by next year I'll be back where i was a month ago just with sharper lenses.

I have been deciding over the 3 cameras for some time.. I'm not to sure about the $200+ for the .5 more viewable lcd. Thats what keeps pushing me back to the 1D mark II and the 20D. So I've been doing a lot of thinking and comparing when I get home from work.

I'm not doing wedding. They just want some casual portraits by the beach to piss off the people in Pensylvania where they plan on getting married.

As for the camera, both are good choices. The 1D MII sounds better to me. If you are buying new, the difference in price between the II and the 20 D is quiet large. I'd consider saving money and getting a 20D with a grip and lenses for the price of a II.

Sounds like fun Tom! You're getting busy with assignments! I notice you were in my neck of the woods - I walk by some of those things on the UCLA campus on a daily basis. Oddly enough, I have never photographed here.
10/04/2005 04:11:20 AM · #300
Yea.. very big difference when they are purchased new. I've been working the numbers time and time again..

I could get some very nice glass along with a flash and still have some change left over if I were to get the 20D.

Then again this camera body will be my last for the next 2 maybe 3 years, but glass and other small accessories will be added over time.

Then again I might wait until after christmas, the 1D MII has went up $250 in the last month and half. Holiday shopping rolling around also might get some deals on lil accessories like Memory cards and what-not.

I'll see when the times comes around.
