These were taken last week down at the Great Salt Lake in Utah:

-

The first one used an umbrella with a 420EX slaved to my 550EX. I positioned it over to my left for side lighting on my daughter, her boyfriend and her dog.

The second one used both my 550EX and the 420EX to try to light up the sail boat (atleast a little) as it was coming in to the marina. You might not guess it, but the second picture was taken about 8 minutes after the first one. The sun had set behind the clouds though there was still enough light that a slow (1/80) exposure at ISO 400 still gave a lot of light.

The one of your daughter looks like you cut and pasted it in there, you might want to see if you can blend or fit them into the background a wee bit more.

Definitely not cut & paste. They are simply lit up by the umrella+420EX combo.

Perhaps you are getting that impression because they are high up on some rocks and the backround water is hundreds of feet away? (thus none of the light from the flash hit the background)

In any case, I don't know what I would do different to "blend or fit them more" into the scene. Perhaps if you could explain your idea a bit more...
