My wife and I are going to toronto for a few days in Mid October; can anyone suggest any places of interest, photographic or otherwise? Any must see things that aren't overly touristy?
Thanks for any suggestions in advance.

I went there for the firs time in spring. It's a great city! The CN Tower is a must at dawn. It's where I took this shot.
I suggest strolling through the art district right downtown. It's trendy and has lotsa good photo opps! :-)
I also wen to the zoo and Wonderland which were fun.

If you'll have a car, Niagra on the Lake is picturesque but an hours drive (or a bit more) away. And Niagra Falls isn't far, either ... honeymoon capital of the world. Ought to photo ops other than the falls if you like candids. |

If you like jazz and spicy food, check out a restaurant called N'awlins.
Toronto is a great city, but it depends on what kind of stuff you like... |

hmm.. toronto. I've been there. wait, I live there. (down the street anyway.. hehe)
some nice shots are the flat iron building at church/front st, the distillery district is also a big draw as of late because of its historic nature. its between parliament and cherry st. south of mill st. ask anyone walking around, they should be able to tell you.
take a walk along queen st. west of yonge st. too for some potential shots and neat shopping niches.

You might try Casa Loma //www.casaloma.org/
Medieval flair surrounded by gardens and window views of the city. |

Take a ferry ride out to the Toronto Islands (Centre Island) for the best skyline views of the city, Autumn foliage, and lake photographs. Rent a two seater bicycle and have a picnic out there while you're at it (bring a jacket/coat cause it can be chilly by the lake).
For great photo opportunities, take a walk through the grounds of the University of Toronto. Many of the buildings date to the early 1800's and in mid-October the ivy that grows over some of these buildings will be changing colour. Its a big campus, bounded by College Street to the south, Bloor to the north, Spadina to the west and University to the east. On the east end of campus, you'll find Queen's Park and the Royal Ontario Museum.
Its a big city, so there's a ton to do and see, so if you want more ideas I'd have to know a little more about what you like...

Thanks for your suggestions. I guess i have always enjoyed cool places, such as thayer street providence, soho, south street phila., newbury street boston, and the likes of melrose for lack of a better california description. Iv'e read some guide books but all they highlight is the obvious stuff; I appreciate any input. |

I'm sure your guide books mention the Kensington Market area (Augusta Street at Baldwin) - this is a perennial hipster area, though not nearly as trendy or large as Melrose and/or Soho. Here you'll find an interesting mix of people and stores as it also borders a Portugese neighbourhood and the west section of the Spadina Chinatown.
Probably my favourite 'cool' neighbourhood is the College St. Little Italy, between Ossington and Bathurst. Like most Toronto neighbourhoods, being very multiethnic, it shares the area with a large Brazilian and Portugese community. For me, it has the right mix of people, sidewalk cafes, architecture (rows upon rows of Victorian homes) and nightlife.

We did go; it was really great, and Ironically, or rather coincidentally, we are going again in a few weeks, October 2005. My inlaws live in Buffalo, and we go with my kids for a week, leave the kids for two days, and go to Toronto.
We had alot of fun just going around, in the rain unfortunately, seeing the city. Kensington market was pretty cool. Its a wonderfully clean place compared to some others, and fantastically diverse.
We had some bad luck with restaurants, which has led me to classify the food in Montreal as much better, however, we did find a nice beer cafe on yonge north of Dundas, called the Volo Cafe, or something to that effect, and they had a terrific beer selection and one of the worst meals I ever had. We also saw Cake, a fantastic rock band, in th efirst row at Massey Hall. Stupid honest me without my camera because of a sign or warning on the ticket "no photography" --- Before the band could play a note, people were snapping ludicrous amounts of flash photograpy.
So we are going back again. This time to museums, perhaps see the collection of Catherine The Great. |
