I've fooled around with it for awhile, but I still haven't figured out a good way to copy a mask from one layer and use that same mask on another layer. Also of interest to me is to find a way to invert a mask to another layer (ie: for adjusting levels in one area with one layer, and then adjusting levels in another area with the other layer). Any help?

With the masked layer as the active layer, "selection/load new": the mask will be the default selection. There's a check-box to invert it. When you click OK and return to the image, the selection will be loaded. Now create a new layer, whatever kind you need, and the selection will be active on that layer. You can also SAVE this selection ("selection/save selection") so you can later return to it without being active in the layer on which it's used.

And for anybody who is missing the final piece, just drop the paint bucket into the area that you want to cover.
