A while back I bought some test sieves for use in one of my other hobbies, and I took a few quick photos of them and put them on my smugmug website. Yesterday, I got an email from the company that makes the sieves and they asked if they could buy the rights to use my photo on their website. They think my photo is better than what they have been using. So, I'm letting them use it for $75.00. Wohoo!
Does $75 sound like a fair price?
Does this mean I'm now a pro? LOL!

I think I'd be happy with $75.
You probably couldn't sell a print for that price on DPC prints!!!
Well done Mick.

Those photos look great. Charge them $75 this time, but next time they come to you with a request be sure to get em!

That company just saved like over a $1000 dollars (or more) on shooting their product. I hope you didn't grant them unlimited usage on it. $75 for a very slim usage might be worth it.

Thanks guys!
Now that I'm a pro I guess I'll have to stop fraternizing with you lowly amateurs. It just wouldn't be good for my image.
LOL!

No doubt. I see it as a win/win situation though. I make $75 off a quick snapshot and get to tell my wife I'm earning money with my expensive camera gear, and they get a photo that they like cheap.

Wow! I just received another email from a writer that wants to use my Cozumel - Passion Island Corona photo, and possibly others, in "PowerPoint presentations, to accompany lectures on topics like glamour, luxury, and aesthetics in business."
Is this for real? I know the first one is valid because I know the company. I recently bought some of their products, and they are a very reputable company. This second one appears to be a legitimate offer too. I've checked out her web site and her bio is quite impressive. But, what are the odds that I would sell two totally unsolicited photos in two consecutive days?
Oh well, I'm jazzed. I guess now I just have to decide what to charge her for the use of my photos. Should I charge her the same price as I did the first one?

Hey, that's great! Rock on girl!
My problem is that I wasn't trying to sell the photos, so I'm not very well prepared to negotiate prices, rights, etc.

Oh heaven forbid! That would be way too much like work. :)
I wouldn't consider that unless I could get $75,000 for a single photo instead of $75. I'm sure that will happen any time now. I better go check my email again. LOL!

So, anybody got any suggestions on what I should charge this new client for using my photos in her PowerPoint presentations and accompanying lectures? Apparently, she writes regular columns for magazines, such the New York Times, Forbes, etc.
Also, any pointers regarding the legal aspects (usage rights, etc., and what and how these should be specified), would be much appreciated.

You don't "sell" a photo...you "license" a photo.
There are many articles written about the importance of understanding the difference. |

Nope...doesn't work that way. Establish yourself as a photographer that accepts low prices and nobody will ever negotiate differently with you down the road.
