I have a 20D and need to purchase a good E-TTL flash for it. I would by the Canon 550, but they really such power, and don't seem to be that fast even with a battery pack (and even with a battery pack, a quantum turbo, it still requires four AA's to work). I there a good Alternative flash I can use? Or is it just best to stick with the Canon flash? I do lots of weddings and sports, and need a flash that can keep up with me and the camera...Thanks!

The Sigma EF-500 Super DG is supposed to be very comparable to the Canon 550EX, for much less money. However, this doesn't address the part of your question regarding the recycle rate.

Well, I don't have an endless budget, but I want to buy the right flash the first time. It feels like the canon 550 gets slowed down by the AA batteries, and not to mention it gets expensive to change AA batteries all the time.

If you use high capacity rechargeable batteries, the recycle time could well be shorter (I believe that they can output higher currents than alkaline cells) and you won't have to keep replacing them.

You could save up and get the 580EX, it would solve your problem,

now for the batteries, you need to go to costco or sams club, they sell in packs of 40-80 for around 20-30 bucks,

I still say that rechargeable is the only way to fly. Faster recycle time and more shots (usually many more) before the batteries die. Get two sets of 2,000mAh at least and you'll be set fair.

The 580EX is a big improvement, I use it with the optional CPE-3 (I think it's called) battery pack with ultra duracells from Costco. The recycle rate was great with and w/o the pack. I asked some experts first because my plan was to buy the Metz 54, but was convinced the E-TTL was better. Love how easily one can do flash exposure compensation on this model too.

THe camera only syncs at max 1/250th, if I had a whine, that would be it.

NiMH batteries rated 2500mAh or higher will give you approximately 4X the runtime of Duracell or Energizer alkalines, plus a faster recycle rate and the obvious economy of rechargeability.
